Looking at installing a 4 ton RUUD package unit, Installer says he can do unit and install of a NORDYNE for the cost of RUUD unit without install. Any comments on NORDYNE. I know RUUD is a good unit.

Thanks

4 ton is pretty big! Do you need this big of a unit? also ask the installer about the filter because the package units I've seen have always left the filter up the the installer and they usually didn't do a good job there.

Nordyne, Tappan, Westinghouse, Frigidare, same manufacturer, theres a few more that escape me right now.You want to make sure that you are getting apples for apples and oranges for oranges when comparing units. In my opinion every manufacturer has units that have drawbacks, there is no perfect unit, we can all find something about them that should be changed. I installed and serviced rudd/rheem for about 8years and was very happy with them. My furnace in my home is a Tappan (was installed by the prev homeowner) and its just fine...I guess my point is that installation is the key, and make sure that whatever units you are debating on that they are comparable in what they offer.

I can say that Tappan has one of the best warranty programs in the business right now. You should check out their website if you have any questions or reservations, or would like to compare them (nordyne products vs. Ruud). There is certainly not any good reason to avoid Tappan/Gibson/Westinghouse...etc.

That said, what concerns me here is the unit cost and install of the Nordyne stuff being the same as just the equipment cost of the Ruud. There are certainly cost differences to consider between brands, but this sounds a little off.

Here is the warranty page for your reference

http://www.tappan.net/tapwarranty.asp

Gibson equipment is exactly the same as Tappan, but carries half of the warranty. Essentially, the extra cost is solely from the extra warranty.

They also make Maytag but it has it's own website. Good solid equipment, best warranty in the biz. I use Westinghouse and Gibson and have had excellent service from both.

Ruud is also an excellent choice.

I would be pleased to have either line.

Are you comparing apples to apples.

Is the Ruud unit a higher end unit then the Nordyne unit.

The only bad thing is the footprint is alot bigger and could cause a problem for the installer.
