View Full Version : Dealing directly with Carrier reguarding an install

A little backstory first. I recently had my AC replaced and went with the Carrier Infinity system. I was happy with the work that was done and when my parents needed their system replaced they bought from the same vendor and bought the same system except got a 5 ton for their bigger house. Since the install they've continuously gotten errors on the thermostat that the filter needed to be replaced. After the last trip out to their house the company told them their duct work needed to be replaced and if they didn't do it they'd void the warranty. At this point my dad is a little ticked and starts calling contacts in the local city and county government about the company and find that they never pulled a permit for the work. They also didn't pull one for my house.
At this point Carrier has gotten involved regarding the problems and is sending someone to their house today to resolve the issue. I'll also be stopping by to request that someone also look at my install even though I haven't had a problem. Currently Carrier has zero'd out their financing but I paid cash. Is there anything realistic that I can ask for beyond an inspection of the install?

Probably what will happen is the distributor the equipment was bought from will send a TM or a Tech support guy, he'll make recommendations to the installing contractor.
The installer can then make the necessary adjustments, depending on how the contract was written and the job was sold. Did the sales guy make know to your father that the duct needed to be addressed. And if so did your father turn down the idea of replacing the duct.
What exactly does zero out the financing mean. If this work was done by a FAD you have a 100% money back guaranty.....Doesn't sound as though it was.
Don't get all freaked out this may be an easy fix....;)
Many contractors do not check/look at the duct system when replacing.
The problem is the original installation of ducts,in most cases.
That said,we check the ducts and advise in advance,as most consumers ,just don't buy the fact that the original ducts are the problem.
We are in Florida also, can assure you that If attic space is accessable ,the fix is usually fairly easy.Add another return duct and grille is often all that's needed.I'm mentioning this because too many think you need to replace all the ducts,if needed i can give you more details on correcting the duct system.
What city are you located in??

Dash, I'm in Tampa near Lowry Park Zoo and my parents are in Lutz.
Roscoe, I'm not really freaking out. I haven't had a problem but knowing that the installer didn't pull a permit means it wasn't going to get inspected like they said. Had my parents not had a problem I wouldn't have known. The only issue I had with the install was that they didn't replace the drain pipe like they were supposed to. But because it runs under my terrazo floor I was willing to let it go. I'm more curious to know if other shortcuts were made. As for the financing it was an authorized dealer and it was Carrier that told the installer to not charge for the system.

I wasn't insinuating you were really freaking just as both dash and I said sometimes it's an easy fix.
So they're coming to take the system out and refund your money if you want then.........
FAD's will refund your money if you're not happy but they get the equipment back....
Either way good luck......cheers......;)

the change filter light coming on is an indication of higher static iin the system. Have the contracter come out and see exactly what the system static is.
With some minor duct changes they should be able to lower the system static.
Another way to eliminate this light from coming on is to tell the system that there is an EAC installed and the indicator will never come on.

I had a Carrier Infinity system installed in April.
The first thing the installing Tech. did was replace
the return air duct with a larger one.
So far this unit has been outstanding.

I also had a Carrier Infinity systerm installed, and am very happy so far.
I had a 14" and 10" flex duct going to 14X30 and 12X12 filters respectively. They replaced the 14" flex duct with 16" (still going to a 14X30 filter box). Its a 4 ton unit.
I notice the static pressure (according to the Infinity thermostat) is about
.63, which I assume is OK.
My only question, is that static reading based on the intake side only, or do the supply vents also impact that reading?
thanks.

it sounds like your freaking out. you want carrier to come look at a system that has never caused any problems? why? cause your fraking out! did you choose not to have the permits pulled to save ya money on the install?

The static shown on the control ,is everything external to the indoor unit,so all ducts, grilles etc.
It also includes the filter, whether it's in the indoor unit or exteral.
.63 is fine.

News Flash!! A permit does not insure that the equipment is installed correctly only that the safety aspects of the system and local city codes are met and are good to go, if you left the quality of complete install up to a local inspector you would be in big trouble, just a thought.
