Trane XL14i A/C vs. Goodman 16 seer R410A A/C

Hi there,

I have a 1276sf. condo that needs a new furnace and air conditioning before I melt :eek: . This is in Gilroy, Ca. so it tends to be a dry heat area.

Got a quote from a professional outfit I trust. They gave me two different systems to choose from, the price diff isn't a factor, I just want to choose the best one. I'm not familiar with the Goodman name so I'd like some opinions on one vs the other.

Here are the particulars:

Trane two-stage 60,000 BTU furnace

Trane XL14i A/C - 2½ Ton 14 seer condenser w/pad

All style 2 ½ Ton coil
3/4x3/8x50ft Line set

Well, they are both 2 stage furnaces. The Goodman is a higher efficiency cooling system. Both use R410a so both have same basic compressors.

Goodman is currently the second largest residential HVAC equipment manufacturer (largest single branded) in the U.S. Maybe their website will help; www.goodmanmfg.com

I don't like the Goodman match up. You won't get full benefit of the 2 stage A/C with a standard blower motor. Won't get 16 SEER either. If you are interested in going that way, ask the dealer for a GME8 variable speed blower furnace and you'll get your 16 SEER and full benefit of the high tech compressor.

With the Trane bid, it is only single stage. Not sure what SEER you'll end up with using the 3rd party coil. With a Trane coil, you get 12.75 to 13 SEER with the 14i and standard blower. You could get a higher rating from the Allstyle since it isn't actually tested with a Trane just computer simulated. In real life, you may not get the full SEER. Also, with the 14i the rest of the Trane system gets a 10 year parts warranty but that won't cover the coil. I'm not experienced with Allstyle coils, the new all aluminum Trane coils should be good.

The Goodman 16 SEER unit is not a two stage, it is a single stage. I do agree that a variable speed blower is always better, no matter what brand is used.

Is that Goodman furnace a GMH8 or a GMH9 series?

I stand corrected on the single stage Goodman. But SEER comments do apply. With 4860 coil, best you'll do with standard blower is 14.0 SEER according to Goodman spec sheet.

with the trane I would go 2-stage with variable speed blower for sure. try and use a matched coil not an allstyle (a trane coil with txv). make sure they give you a 2-stage thermostat, otherwise stage 2 starts after 7 minutes

make sure they use a line-set chase cover for any exposed line set if this is a retro and they are coming down a wall.

You did NOT.... Its going to condensate to a small gravel bed in front of the condo by the garage, the furnace will be in the garage, the AC on a pad out back...

Hah, thanks Matt, it's gettin' to be that time of year too. Stinky around here.
The unit will drain to a small gravel bed next to the garage out front. The furnace goes in the garage, and the AC on a pad out back (lines run under the condo)
