I am replacing my air conditioner and furnace. ONe contractor told me that the Ruud equipment he sells is the same thing as the Rheem equipment sold by another contractor. The Ruud furnace is a two-stage 80% UGPL series, while the Rheem is a two-stage 80% RGPK series. The Rheem A/C is the Classic 14 3 1/2 ton with 410-A refrigerant. The Ruud is the same except for being 13 SEER, although the contractor is supposed to be finding out if the Ruud 14 SEER is available. I was really thinking of getting Rheem---is Ruud the same thing? Thanks for any info!

Rheem Ruud are the same thing, Rheem models start with an R , Ruud with a U. The other letters in the model should be the same, for an apple to an apple

The -GPK is an older 2 stage 80% unit. The -GPL is the older 2 stage variable speed blower unit. You aren't comparing like products with the L model having the variable speed blower which has many advantages.

The -GPK has been replaced with the -GPQ and the variable speed unit is the -GPR. These are the Quiet 80 models which are extremely quiet with the solid front.

In some areas, both brands are sold by the same distributor, other areas have a supplier for each so many not sell the same thing. In some cases, the -PNL heat pump with variable speed blower reaches 14 SEER. We're doing one Wednesday with a variable speed 90 and it rates that way.

I think the Ruud contractor got the model numbers mixed up. We were not considering variable speed due to possible ductwork issues (I think that was the reason). Anyway, thanks for clearing up the Ruud/Rheem issue and for informing me about the numbers for the newer models--I don't think I want older models. Thanks again. What a great website!

??? usually variable speed IS considered because of the ability to compensate a little bit for minor duct issues.

For A/C they are both made on the assembly line in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
