We have to replace the forced air handler in our basement.
The old one suffered some damage...

The replacement unit is going to be a 13 SEER unit. The condenser is still a 10 SEER. A/C guy - who I trust - says it'll be fine, they can match the two with a valve, it'll run at 10 SEER.

My question is more about efficiency. I'm not looking to spend any more than I have to and a new condensor isn't cheap, but is the extra efficiency worth the extra cost over what I'll have, or am I better waiting until the condensor craps out and then getting a 13 SEER unit outside? He's not going to charge me much for the install either way, so that's less of an issue.

Where you live, are the electric rates cheap, and is the climate cool(northern states)? I'd prefer a new matched system, but yours will work with the txv valve being installed, just not as efficient.

It depends on your definition of cool! We're in downstate NY - but then anything over 70 I consider too hot - and Con-Ed are never cheap...

Whether or not you get any extra much less what you think you might have depends on the installation, duct tightness, building envelope. If you don't want to spend much on your AC, focus your savings on the ductwork and sealing the house. You'll probably gain more doing that then jumping into a new condenser unit right away. Those things will also help you for heating...
