Just wondering how often other techs out there are on call and for what period of time? For me it's every 8 weeks and the only incentive is 4 hours pto. Oh and the over time you get for going on the calls.

One week a month, pretty much work or be fired too. We get either $15 or a hour added to our vacation for every call we run. If we don't run any, we don't get anything.

I just started working for a company after a 9 month absence in the trade that told me on call would be every 8 weeks. Four days after I start they tell me, Ohh. Gee you won't told we have two different call schedules to observe. As much as I hate to look again elsewhere, I despise liars. I guess they are fortunate I did'nt dump my tools out of their truck tonight.

OEMS had it that you were on 2X a season then in Sept/April they gave it out for a month stretch....to those who wanted it.then the OEMS took on the national contracts and the big tonnage techs had no laddders and it went to once a month year round for the recip guys.the rate to just be on was 9 hours times your hourly rate$$$$ plus the OT out on call!

It just aint worth doin it for time and a half only. My time away from my family and my nice warm bed is very important to me; if you don't want to compensate me for my time away from my family allowing you to spend your time in your bed with your family then do it yourself!
You say you paid your dues...well I have been in the trade for 13yrs I've paid mine as well! Why should I "go the extra mile" to build your business when I get little or no compensation for doing it!
Before you all jump on me... YES, I went out on my own for just this reason! I will not work on call for basically nothing for any employer ever again! If this doesn't work out I am getting out of the trade all together and going to factory work and do hvac on the side for extra money. I can piss around and make as much money working HVAC here in town as I would working factory work; all cash and non reportable :D .
Well that's my .02 worth.

Every 3rd week, get 50 to be on call, plus anything over 40 is time and a half. Fri to fri.
Last week I was on call fri to fri I had 78 hours in. The worst part is uncle sam takes it all, I can barely see a difference in my check and I make good money. I also pay taxes in two states, so that has a big effect on it.
Work or find a new job!

contact your local federal dept of labor office.
they have specific rules on this issue . rules that every employer must comform to. and they are very generous to the worker not the employer
the last time i checked up on it the rate was to compensate the worker at 10% of his hourly rate for each hour he was standing by, so if you make $20 an hour that $2.00 per hour on call, if you did not get a call out then
24hours X 7 days = 168 hours per week, minus 40 hours you work leaves 128 hours on call time $2.00 hour yields $256.00 week on call, less any call outs time that r subtracted from the 128. and those call out are 1.5 ot no matter how many hours you get in that week
amickracing

Interesting!
I'm on call 24/7, and I get nothing for it other than more hours. After work hours is 1.5 time, saturday is 1.5 time, sunday is 2x.
Personally, I like service work, so in a small way I look forward to doing it (vs sheetmetal which is 90% of what I do). But my spare time is very crammed with plenty to do that revolves around my life, taking it away really sucks the enthusiasm out of me.
For the most part our company motto is "they call, you go".
Thank god I'm leaving!

I know your shop has had the incentive to fire you on several occassions, and if they weren't so short handed they would have.
This Grimmer guy is unreal. Mods should ban him. It is clear that his only intentions are to sabatoge another member.
It is unclear as to the dynamics of the relationship between these two. However, based on the quote above, he is likely a coworker or management because he knows things that are typically only known within the workplace. Given this observation, it would be fit "probable cause" for a cival investigation, launched on behalf of bustedwrench1 by a competent attorney.
Depending on the dynamics, "Grimmer" can be sued for this comment by bustedwrench1 under the 3rd party disclosure laws, provided he is a coworker or worse, management at bustedwrech's place of employment. All an attorney would need to do is subpoena the ISP records, associated with the IP address, logged with this post.
It happens all the time. Grimmer, be careful. The www is not as annonymous as it may seem and if an attorny who was looking for some action were to see this an investigation and possibly a lawsuit brought fourth by bustedwrench1 could well be the result.
P.S.
Freedom of speach and freedom of press? Nope. Not if (a) the party publishing the facts fails to substantiate them and the facts are nonexistent or innaccurate, causing undue harm to someone else, and, (b) if the INTENT is malicious.

.........I do not wish to have a fight with you. If you are on hard times, I'm sorry to hear that. If you blame me for your troubles, let me remind you that I had nothing to do with your situation.
Let's just assume you are having a bad nite and drop it. Do you really want to force me to get Law Enforcement involved?
It does not sound to me like the two of you were on the same page so next time you ought to (A) be more careful, and (B) not publicly bust someone's chops in writing 'cause if you annoy then enough and things flare up, there could be resulting damages.
I for one, accept your apoligy for what it is, a notion to be silent and that's great. More often than not, that occurs once I write a letter like the one I posted here. ;)
Moving on, welcome to the community.

On call every nine days. $20 for being on call during the week and $25 on weekends and holidays. Time and a half from 8:00am to midnight and double time from midnight to 8:00am. Double time on holidays and Sundays. During the week on call starts at the end of your 8 hour shift and ends at 8:00am the next day. On weekends 8:00am to 8:00am 24 hours. So I am on call this Friday and start at 8:00am and finish at 8:00am Saturday

In my old company I ran the 14 day cycle. 14 on call 2 off. $50 for the 5weekdays and 4 hours on the weekend + 1.5 on all calls @ 2hr. minimum.
Now I'm in the box 5 times this year. 3 where I answer the calls and dispatch a tech and 2 times where I'm dispatched. It may be 6 times but I won't know until the end of November. I get 9 hours travel time per week on call and no rewards for the stand by portion other than paid 4 hr. minimum per call when sent out. The worse part of this for me is that this year I get 3 holiday weeks either on call or standby, Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Veterans Day weeks. No big deal, since I don't do much on the weekends anyway.

i think its too funny work or be fired. Im on call every 4 weeks. i told my boss when im on call just keep slamming me with calls.i work all week whether on call or not from 8am to 8-12pm. Its all about taking care of buisness. I enjoy helping people and making things work. Oh yea and when this younger tech with less experience gets a call my boss thinks he can't handle i get sent out as long as i haven't been partyin. Im addicted to money so i take all the ot possible.

It depends how constraint the on call person is.
If he is not being held back from normal after work activities, it doesn't apply.
Going out drinking doesn't count.
