View Full Version : What do you think of this lineset routing?

I'm having a 3-ton Trane XL14i installed this week. The compressor unit is being relocated further away from the air handler than its current position (I want the unit off of my deck!). Please give me your opinion on this lineset routing...

[** Warning: Crude drawings ahead **]

HERE (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/gpowers93/Trane%20XE1200/Current.jpg) is what my current setup looks like. There are no elevation changes except for where the lines will have to drop down 18" or so to enter the air handler.

HERE (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/gpowers93/Trane%20XE1200/Route1.jpg) is what I'm expecting them to do. This design will introduce more length as well as 3 additional 90 degree bends. What is your opinion of this design...and what size lines would you expect them to use in this scenario?

Would it be a waste of effort to make a couple of those 90 degree bends more gradual...like THIS (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v292/gpowers93/Trane%20XE1200/Route22.jpg)?

Thanks for any feedback. :)

There are charts that come with the equipment that specify length, height, size, etc. Ask your sales person for the chart before the installer gets there. If he will not work with you, get a different contractor.

Should be no major loss of capacity if its just an A/C.
A heat pump will lose more heating capacity.

Your contractor should be able to tell you what losses you will have from the extra length.

I really appreciate the feedback! I forgot to mention that this is a heat pump.

I respect my contractor, but fear they may be tempted to take the easy way out when it comes time to route the lineset. I want to verify the best approach with you guys BEFORE the installers show up.

1. Would it be better to extend the line on the inside of the house as much as possible as opposed to running it outside? Does it matter?

2. How significant is the efficiency loss from right angle bends? Should I expect them to do whatever is reasonable to avoid them? Am I just being paranoid?

Again...thanks for your help.

For a heat pump, inside is better for a long line set.

2 - 45 degree els, have the same amount of resistance as 1 long radius 90.

Less chance of 1 long radius 90 leaking from brazing then 2 - 45's.
