First one was 2 units one for upstairs, one for downstairs. Unico system, 1.5 tons (18,000 btu), 13 seer for each unit.
The second quote was for Hi-Velocity brand (www.hi-velocity.com).
For single unit, 5 ton unit, 14 seer. For dual unit it would be one 3 ton and one 2 ton unit.
The house is about 2200-2300 sq feet, center hall colonial.
Would 3 tons be enough? Is 5 tons to much?
Thanks.

No one can answer that without a whole lot more info. Best way to tell is as ALWAYS do a load calc to determine what the home needs. If neither of these contractors did a load calc, keep calling until you get someone who will. These are just two very different size systems to take a gamble on. Good luck.;)
P.S. 5 tons sounds like a whole lot for that size house but you need the calc done. Plus at 7-8 registers per ton.... you got room in that house for 40 supply outlets.

5 tons sounds like way to much cooling unless you have a lot of glass and very poor insulation or alot of people or lights ovens .most high velocity system operate around a 11 seer so I dont know if a 14seer will save you any money do a correct heat load .

Usually the guy quoting smaller stuff is the one sizing right. Those that guess, guess big to be safe. Just my experience and certainly a guess here!
One advantage to Unico is their ARI ratings. You know what you are getting in terms of SEER & capacity with various outdoor units. Last I knew, the other guys didn't participate in the ARI process which I'm sure saves them a bundle but you don't know what you are getting. Also Unico has been around a while and is a class act in high velocity. The other guys may be too but don't have the reputation that Unico does.
