This is a new contract that we just started today. The chiller has been plugging oil filters since last cooling season and have had oil filters replaced three times already this year. Hear we come today and learn about the history. check log sheets and find the last filter only lasted 175 hrs. Replaced oil filter today to inspect the filter and remove oil sample. The oil is dark and the bowl has clay like sediment plugging the bowl drain that had to be dug out.

I am returning to take refrigerant samples and have sugested eddie current testing. The other contractor has leak checked the chiller and wrote up the shaft seal. Winter maintenance oil sample results were not suppied to owner.

The filter did not seem to be metallic sediment, just dark brown like mud. Any input on what to check to confirm problem or just share thoughts.

Probably powdered rust do to leaks. It will take several oil changes along with oil filter and drier changes to clean it up. I'd run the larger micron oil filters while cleaning it up then go back to the smaller micron filters. Ive had it take me up to 6 changes to clean it up, its a slow frustrating process. This works every time as long as someones willing to pay for it. JMHO

change the small oil return filter on the none panel side to a single suction core filter it will clean it up faster
