2 Stage vs. Single stage compressor

I am building a new home and am going with a hybrid (dual fuel) heat pump with a variable speed, high efficiency gas furnace for low temps. I am trying to decide whether to go with the Lennox dual stage compressor or the single stage compressor on the AC side. My builders HVAC guy suggested staying away from the dual stage due to the fact they are more expensive to repair should it be necessary. This kind of surprised me as having gotten bids from other HVAC contractors, they have all steered me towards the 2 stage compressor. Any help would be appreciated.:confused:

Strange that he would say that.

I recomend to most customers that want multi stage( 2 stage compressors) heat pumps and 2 stage gas furnace back up, to get the extended 10 parts and labor warranty.

It may be that this contractor is not familiar with multi stage heat pumps.
And isn't sure if he can get it to work.

Are you referring to installation or repair?

Ask your contractor about an extended parts and labor warranty. Most extended warranties will be between the homeowner and the manufacturer. They are excellent insurance policy if a part should go away. There is generally no out of pocket expenses inicurred by the homeowner when warranty repair is needed. Go with a 10 year. their costs vary to $400 - $600. Labor alone for a dual compressor changeout can easily exceed $600. Good Luck!

Are you referring to installation or repair?

He may be referring to both an installation and a start-up concern. Proper wiring of all controls related to staging, and proper calibration of staging so 2nd stage in either heating or cooling only comes on when needed. You don't want 2nd stage kicking in too early, or staying on too long.

that may have been true in the past with the older 2 speed units.
really not much to go wrong on the 2 stage scroll lennox uses.
the added cofort of a 2 stage system is well worth the risk in my opinion.
