I have a Tempstar Model #T4A4. The unit is very quite when running (the manual says 68db on low) and the unit also kicks on very quietly...but, right after the thermostat request for cooling ends...the unit kicks off power, the fan powers off, the compressor powers off and then "POP, POP, POP, POP!"
The unit is less than one week old, and I can't remember if this was a recent noise, or if it has always done this. I dont have any HVAC experience but it doesn't sound normal. I know these are hard questions to ask since you can't actually hear the noise; Does this noise sound normal? Any ideas what it could be?

Not normal. Call the installer back.

Agreed.

Metal plenums constructed of light guage metal can do this when a new unit
is installed with a higher cfm blower. The popping is the metal popping back into place. The onus, whatever the bummer is, is the installer's bummer.

Good answer Rick.

I forgot to mention a few things that are probably of importance. The problem is intermittent. I had the tech come over and listen and no noise. I don't know HVAC but I thought the plenum was in the furnace? It appears to do this when the unit has run for a longer period of time... There haven't been enough hot days to tell anymore than that.

If it's the pressurization of the duct work (the plenum is the sheet metal directly attached to the top of the furnace) as Rick stated, you can repeat the sound by turning the TSTAT to "fan-on". Then turn it off after at least 1 minute, this will pressurize (and maybe flex the duct work outward) then turn the fan off and listen for the pop sound. By the way, the plenum should have cross breaks on it to prevent flexing. Cross breaks are metal bends in the sheet metal in an X shape.

The noise is coming from the outdoor unit. There is no noise inside anywhere with the furnace or around the furnace. Its a series of clicks or pops made by the outdoor unit, right before it shuts completely off. As far as I can tell its coming from very close to the compressor. I thought it might have something to do with r410a, or perhaps it was normal when hotter outside? Call me crazy, I'm just not hvac person. My installer says he has to hear it to know what it could be but haven't been able to duplicate when he is here.

I love going on those calls. "Its making this noise". Show up at customers house and the thing runs like a champ. No "noise".
