I currently carry 12 different jugs :(
To answer your questions........... There is a lot of money to be made by refrigerant companies nowadays. imo.

402a/b is intended as replacements for 502. 404a is not scheduled for phaseout so no replacement is necessary or even desirable in my opinion.
409a is not a replacement for 401a/b, simple an alternative. Both are replacements for R-12 in certain applications.
And yes, we carry 10-12 flavors of juice too.

Not a bad choice for 6 refrigerants. Have you tried/considered limiting the R-12 service replacements to one refrigerant? You're using MP66 (R-401B) for low temp, and R-414B (Hot Shot) for medium temp, presumably.

I have not tried 414B for low temp r12 replacement. I have heard it's not as good at low temp. Besides i think most here will agree that 401B is the best low temp replacement for r12.

It would be nice to get back to just 3 or 4 refrigerants.
When I started this service biz just over 4 years ago I was having to buy refrigerants I never heard of and at one time I had god knows how many different types (allmost needed a trailer just to haul the refrigerants). Seemed every job for a while I had to order up different juices.
Every outfit that ventured into these parts had a different refrigerant solution. Half the gases were completely unidentifiable in the systems and much time spent pondering what the hell would act like that.
Its even more difficult when the nearest vendor is over 50 miles away.
I have fortunately been able to standardize the gases a little and now have it so most of my customers are using similar refrigerants.
We now carry only seven types and would like to get that down to 5, IF I could.
134a, 401b, 409a, 404a, 401a, R22, 410a.. A few partial jugs of this and that remain in the shop.
Unless new mfgs equipment requires something else will do all we can to hold the line on gases. Anything else will be priced accordingly.

409A & 401A are both Medium temp replacements for R12. You could do away with one of those.

Just curious, but what are the reasons you would use 401 as opposed to 414? I'm curious as to what specific conditions dictate this option. Or is this a one of those "I'm a chevy guy, ford guy things?

My world turns around 22,409,404.I have to keep 2 of each cans,so I am not short of any of them any time.used to keep 134 and 408 also.134 is mostly in small equipment if it leaked out it's gone anyway, have been replacing it with 409 for 3 years now, haven't had problem yet.Except one supermarket I have been servicing I am not coming accross 408 either. So I stopped carrying it.(I don't have a shop or garage.)
I know it's not the perfect way but it's efficient for my business and space so far.:o

Rango,
Depends on wich 401 you are refering to, A or B? 401B is a low temp R12 replacement. 401A & 414B are medium temp R12 replacements. As far as 401A vs. 414B, its like the Ford & Chevy thing.

You guys with 12 jugs ought to loose a little. DOT requires plackards and special inspections for any vehicle carrying over 330 pounds of any pressurized gas/liquid combined. This includes CO2, Nitro, freon, oxy, acetylene, WD40, blast-a-coil, whatever...

who would like to have two different kinds of freon on their truck? It has been found that 414B (Hot Shot) does not do what Icor claims ie: replacement for R12. R134A, R500 good for low temperature.
If you read other posts on the subject. When R-409A came out, they gave us(Servicefitters Traininng Center) a sample to test and the head pressure was a big issue because no one cleans their condensers the way they should, and kitchens a very hot.
After numerous problems the best solution was MP-39 for medium R-12 and MP-66 for low temp :)
Does anyone use 507. It is common here in B.C.

fire, my co. uses 507 by the boatload. pretty much exclusively for low temp. only carry it and 22 on the truck, everything else we have parts driver bring us if necessary.

Well, the refrigerant industry is making a mint coming up with more and more refrigerants you still have to recover even thou they call them "enviornmentally safe". Don't get me wrong I think recovery laws should have been in place eons ago. Think of the ton of missed money.
One of the manu. techs told a group of us that we will be headed to 3 to 4 industry standard refrigerants. Would be nice. One of the supers I service has loads of cfcs . An old school tech here keeps using the stuff. Too much trouble to convert I guess. Seems to me If you repalce a comp, Why not change the gas, and go poe. Sure these have issues but we should be retirng cfcs instead of reclaiming recycling the ****.!!!!!!
