View Full Version : Compressor runs, line is cold, but no cold air

I'm posting this on my fathers behalf, whom is HVAC certified. We have installed a new AC (Air Handler and Heat Pump/Compressor, alone with new pipes), and we are having a major problem, where he can't even figure out. Being I am an electrician, he had ME do the wiring, which is confirmed as being ok, as everything kicks in as it should (and thermostat has it's 24v AC to run off of).

So, here's the deal..
1. Air Handler and compressor both turn on.
2. The small pipe (I think that one was the Low side? I forget what my father said it was), gets cold, at the air handler, but at about 75 degrees F.. (where ambient temperature is 88)..
3. The air coming out of the vents is no colder than that of the room.
4. The coil DOES get to the same coldness as the small pipe, so it's not cloged.
5. When the system first kicks in, the big pipe (High?), gets cold, then slowly gets back to normal close to room temperature.

My father has tried charging the compressor, but it just won't suck the R-22 freon in it.. The scale started at 30lbs, and it stayed there, never moved. I wasn't there when he first ran it, and I think he did vacuum it (being the obvious part).

What should I relay to him, as to try next? Being florida, it's a little too hot to have no AC..

EDIT: Oh, and sometimes the High line going into the compressor freezes all white instead of the copper color.. But past the valve going into the house, it is normal copper color.. (the valve being attached to the outside of the heat pump)

EDIT: Forgot to mention, both machines, the handler and pump are both Goodman machines.. The heat pump has the obvious high and low side, but also has another port sticking out in the middle.. the manual doesn't even mention of it, and the old pump the house had didn't have that one..

Did you open the service valves? Sounds like you need to call a tech and double check your work. DIY isn't allowed in the general forum areas sorry.

the service valves have been opened..

then how do i post the DIY stuff? like I said, my father is HVAC certified, and licensed to do homes, but we've never had a thing like this happen before.. Everything kicks in, but the coils just aren't getting cold enough, and it's just not sucking the freon into the system...

We just need a quick answer, it's hot as hell here, and if we call a tech here, our local places will just have us wait a week before a tech can even be dispatched.. by that time, we'll probably have died of heat exhaustion, AND the smoke that we are getting from Georgia (and now florida!) ;) It just can't wait, I have asthma personally, so this affects me medically..

If my father needs to supply proof just to get an answer, then fine, but i can't wait for that to happen if it'll take too long..

You don't post DIY stuff....Wouldn't that kinda defeat the purpose of going an being a HVAC tech and making a living on it? Would kinda work ourselves out of jobs by telling people how to do it for free....There is plenty of advice just not a how to fix your system. Sorry. I'm not to sure on the requirements again to get into being a pro. Check site rules and then look into it. You might be able to get some help that way.

then why have a forum? obviously you call and hire a tech for money to do it FOR you..

if this is a medical emergency, like it is for ME, then there should be some exceptions, to help another HVAC tech who is having problems... if not, that's just not right.. im tired of coughing from smoke and haze from outdoor air, and would like to get the system working again..

me and my father have already been trying to get the damned thing working..

if i can't get answers here, i'll just ask elsewhere...

Thats what the pros section is for. In general discussion area homeowners that want to ask questions are welcome. But no price quotes and no DIY. I didn't make the rules I just try my best to follow them :)

We'd hate to see you go. But how can I tell that you are different from a DIY'er that just doesn't want to pay for a system and tried to do it themselves and now needs help because it's all screwed up.

Honestly all you can really do here is guess anyways without being there or getting a huge list of information about the system. I can tell you that if it's not taking in ref. then you have an issue and it's probably a restriction somewhere. If you want to find it elsewhere google it you might be able to find it you might not. If your father knows and understand HVAC and the system layout then he shouldn't have a big issue with finding the problem. Again sorry.

well at the moment i am making an email to become PRO (and just for this issue).. i'm going to supply any information they need from my father (proof of certs, etc)..

im sure other DIY'ers won't do that ;) we could have easily got a new system installed, but the current situation, like i said, for florida and the georgia fire, the wait isn't acceptable, and the old system was on it's last legs and died on us... (it was older than me! and im 20 years old)

actually we get a bunch of DIY'ers and they all get the same answer....Once you become a pro you will find a bunch more info than just what you need to help you here. Bookmark this site I promise you won't regret it...may even make you think about changing trades.

Please read the forum rules regarding DIY help on this site. There is a link in my signature line.

You need at least 15 posts for Pro Membership and it can take several weeks for approval, the membership Committee is all volunteer like the Mods.

I suggest you call a licensed HVAC Service Company to resolve your issue.
