View Full Version : Variable Position Residential Damper?

Anybody ever use any variable position dampers in residential applications? I mean a damper that can be placed at 0-100% open to create a desired airflow per the temperature differential between measured and desired temperature, the assumed load for the space at that given time and maybe pressure differential.
I've only seen Open / Close residential dampers. Obviously a variable position type application needs an intelligent controller. Any products / packages come to mind?
Without quoting pricing, any relative ( i.e 4x ) comments on cost to open/close dampers would be appreciated.

look for dampers associated with zoned systems
but, get a contractor who has installed such before

Johnstone sells a kit but it is more for fresh aire intake, thus it uses a controller that you set the sq ft of the house and bedroom number.

Honeywell makes a great little zone system: Model EMM-3UK. Up to three zones with convential thermostats, etc. Trane makes ComfortLink for a few more features and capabilities. Have Fun! ;)

I am trying to follow you here are you talking about using this for a dedicated room or rooms or the whole house?
If you talking about a room that would be easy to set up on your existing system by just using a damper in conjunction with a thermostat that would be installed in that room, were the stat would open and close the damper according to temp. desired, but the "only" fall back to that would be if the home system is not running well forget keeping that room at a desired temp.

The Carrier Infinity zoning system is a modulating zoning system.
Contact a Carrier dealer in your area.

You're talkin' about residential VAV boxes like in commercial applications, where there's a minimum and maximum airflow and a controller with PID logic? All hooked to an air handler with VFD and either a staged DX coil or a chilled water coil with 3 way modulating valve?
I suppose with the advent of residential split systems with inverter driven compressors, variable condenser and evap fans, you could drive the evap fan by static pressure and feed pressure independent boxes throughout the house...man that would be one high fallutin' system for a house! :D

If you can find something small enough, don't forget about commercial stuff. Just because it says "commercial" on it doesn't mean it won't work in resi.
