Im bout ready to give up.
I have checked my 24Vlts coming in, pulls in contactor fine. points are good. checked the start Cap. good, fan Cap. good, fans running, buzz from the compressor then compressor shuts off. When i try to ohm out my 3 terminals on the compressor they ohm out to zero. as if a direct short. thats with nothing conected to the compressor.
before this i went and bought a Boost, Hard sart SPP6 thinking maybe since it's a model from 92 it may need a lil more push. no difference. buzz then shut off. Now i thought if low on REF. it' won't even buzz as if it's trying to start?
From working on other motors and such and might be different but if I ohm out on T1 and T2 there isn't a short.
are the windings bad in this compressor and needs to be replaced?
Compressor is a copeland CR42k6-PFV-270 but shouldnt matter.
Thanks, Howard

sounds like its locking up..check ampdraw, call a pro and have it done right..it will buzz when it tries to start, then cut off on overload when it cant cuz its drawing locked rotor..you can tell this by checking ampdraw..

Wonder what those amps are when it tries to start? LRA+
I've seen wires connected wrong and windings burnt/melted together.
Maybe should have had a pro look at it first. Now is a good time.

yeah, I don't have my fluke to check the amp draw. I will have to check that as well. def. seems like it's hitting an overload.
Another thing i thought, reverse the phase of the motor? I normally work on 3 phase motors and such, so I don't think this is the same and reversable like that. thought maybe if froze up it may unlock it? I'll ahve to get the meter though.

Goodbye.

well 92 is the date on the shell of the unit, not stamped on the compressor. I don't have a date for the compressor.

If your using the ohm meter correctly- it's shorted. Adios, bye bye, sirenara.

its a single phase motor,no reversing phases here, only one..the locked rotor of this compressor is around 102 amps..if the hard start boost didnt work, it sucks but its dead...sometimes if you keep it off long enough and it cools, you can get it to go w/ a hard start kit,but thats rare..this model is still available through copleand, replace it,but the whole condenser is a better idea

If you keep screwing with it the acid level will continue to rise and make an easy clean up turn into a expensive project. Call a pro while it is still cost effective to fix.

last issue on it for tonight. On the compressor, ther eis a white ceramic plug that was out. retained by a plastic holder. this runs on 12volts on each leg, (two wire plug). I don't know what that is. I was thinking a thermal switch of some sort. i put the ceramic plug back into the compressor. but with no difference in performance. i did know that after trying to run it the first time and the plug was out that it was pretty darn hot.
Whats it's function?

May be an external thermal over load protector.
The longer you keep trying to start this thing. The more you are contaminating your system.(acid)
Time for replacement.

Finally was able to get back out there to test that unit. yeah, pulling 118 amps. soooo. just like I was told here it really is dead. time for a new condenser and coil I say. all of it is 15 years old.
Thanks, Howard
