( floor joists etc in way.. i heard of panning in the joints and just using them as a return.. is there any web site or info i can recieve to help me.. it is almost 8 degrees warmer up stairs than down.... any help would be nice.. sorry no pics.. i dont have any fancy camera.. im still in the dark ages..

If it's warmer upstairs in cooling, with all the doors open so air can get back to the return, you need more supply air ,not return.

Be sure before you add the return.

If you need more supply, and can increase the size, look at improving the flow, better fittings, near the indoor unit ,and adding attic and kneewal insulation to reduce the load.

Actaully adding insulation is a better thing to do first,as it can help, and reduces operating cost..
