For the first time(in only 4 yrs) I came accross a compressor that was bad out of box.I lost quite a bit time today I had to push a few calls to tomorrow if I don't get blasted with other calls..My supplier didn't have anything else that I could replace it with so they refunded my money.
The main guy wasn't working today. So do you think I should ask him tomorrow for some compansation for my lost time and extra trips?I have had good relationship with them so far.I don't know if it will be appropriate.I am kind of new around the block.:)

No,
Don't ask for anything extra. Just get a new compressor and deal with it.
Sh!t happens!

Compensation: Hmmm, not the norm in this business from my observations.
Depending on your perception of your relationship with the manager at the parts house, you could make mention of it. I would not expect anything beyond an "Gee, I am really sorry"... and perhaps a free box of donuts... which you probably would get anyhow for buying lots of stuff there...
Just the way things go IMO.
On this subject: I know we cannot check a compressor at the parts counter, but we can open boxes and look at parts. I have caught a few bad or damaged or with accessories missing in the box before I had to go back. Just my nature to check everything.
Sorry you had a bad day; tomorrow will be better.

Do the supply houses care if you ohm them out before leaving?

Many so called DOA's were killed by system problems. Big one is excess oil in system, this can kill a welded pot very quickly. So explain DOA.

that's what they called it at the supply house.dead on arrival:
DOA.
I correctly wired all the new components. It just wouldn't start till I hit the compressor.I tried to cycle it,after I cooled it a while. It wouldn't start.I put a new start cap(the old one measured OK too),broke the #1 wire from #2 by hand. etc.Checked for voltage etc...
I bought the same compressor from another supply house.wired the same way.No problem.

In my experience, when a compressor is found to be defective out of the box...or DOA....and you have lost time and money due to this defect, the wholesaler should put you in touch with the compressor manufacturer's sales rep to file a claim. While your losses aren't specifically covered under their warranty, it's not unheard of to get a settlement from the manufacturer if they find that they did in fact screw up.
It's worth a shot.

Think about how many compressors manufacturers warrant with no questions asked that are truly defective. It works both ways.

Ice,they have to collect 39:rolleyes: tecumseh compressors to return mine with them, then the guy at tecumseh has to confirm my claim that its a DOA so I can take it from there.I already let it go.

most likely the manufacterer will not foot the bill, they will inspect it and probable blame it in the shipper or supply house,or you,it is VERY unlikely a compressor will be D.O.A unless dropped or mishandled.

I have had 2 DOA compressors in my career dead right out of the box. Both times our wholesaler replaced them at no cost to us. I don't know if we got any labor allowance back or not. I was not privileged to receive that info just being a service tech!

just a possibility but I had a fractional hp tecumseh with c,s,&r labeled the same as the original but they were swapped inside the comp rare occurence but in manufacturing there is human error involved.service manager came out and checked windings to identify c,s.&r rewired and it fired right up he had that happen to him before.

I had 2 in a row bad out of the box a year or so ago. It makes you question everything you are!
Yes, ask your supplier for something. A jug of refrigerant or something. I do. And I get it.
