Hey all,

Purchaing a 2800 sqf 1910 colonial. Putting in all new windows and have all the walls insulated (attic as well). The house currently has a 10 yr old Weil-McLain (200k BTU) with an efficiency rating of 80. I am putting in AC and the AC guy is tryng to talk me into converting over to Hydro air. I would have to replace the boiler. I am just not sure if it is worh the extra $$$. Currently the house has a single zone steam heat. The house was convertef from oil to gas at the time the Weil-McLain was purchased.

What do you think? I have only ever had steam. The one thing I would gain is dual zones. Not sure if I would recoup my $$ by having the 2 zones.

Thoughts, suggestions?

Pretty hard to beat the comfort of a good steam system!

You may be able to keep the boiler if you can convert it to hot water. Replacing would be EXPENSIVE, especially going to a more efficient boiler. Those suckers are steep! I doubt you'd ever recoup the upfront cost plus you'd lose the comfort of the radiators.

cant beat the comfort of steam as has been said
with the upgrades you are dont to the house you will save on heating and cooling

the boiler is only ten yeasr old and has many years left to it

i would wait till you have expensive problems with the steam system then address changing and replacing
