 Went to existing customers house. 54 degrees outside temprature that day. Indoor temp was 71.

- Complaint was that the bill for Jan. Feb. and March had been over
$500 per month....in prior years, bills had been in the low $300s.

- Arrived, cond. fan was running, compressor was not.
>>> Diagnosis was that the compressor was in lock out. I pull
the disconnect and get ready to isolate the compressor leads to
identify if the compressor went to ground or were the windings opened
up. Customer walks outside at that moment. So, I put the contactor
back in to demonstrate that the compressor was not coming on.....whalla
the compressor comes on.

BUT, BUT, BUT, BUT
- The pressures both started going thru the roof. Suction pegged in the
retard and the head went well above 350.
>>> NOTE: PRESSURES WERE GOING UP IN TANDEM. NOT ONE LOW AND
THE OTHER HIGH....BOTH GOING UP TOGETHER.

So, I switched over to A/C mode. The thing worked perfectly in a/c mode.
Ambient and indoor are above. Suction pressure was 53 and heat was 121.

>>>> Diagnosis, I had a blockage in the outside unit that only was
showing itself in Heating Mode, when the reversing valve was in default/
heat mode.

So, I looked for a blockage and had absolutely no luck.

> I replaced the heat pump with a 13 seer american standard (the inside
air handler was a 2twe042C)
> I removed the piston/accuator/metering device from the existing a.h.
and installed an external TXV
> I cleaned the evap coil and used a spray to get all the dust off of the
fins.

ARRRRRRRRRHHHHHHHHHHHHH I still have both pressures going
up in Heat Mode. Not as high....only about 250. But, the heat pump
is not heating unless the electric heat strips are on.

PLEASE OFFER IDEAS ASAP.

I have an idea - why don't you register as a professional member and ask there? If you really are a contractor you'll get answers in the pro forums. No one wants to give advice here because site rules prevent giving out DIY info.

I will say that the compressor probably was not locked out, and I suggest you call someone that knows heat pumps.

Did not realize. How do you register as a pro. contractor?

"If you really are....."

Why would I say that I am a contractor and not be a contractor?

Just register as a PRO if you are one and there won't be a problem.

Register for pro membership.

And your readings that you posted, didn't point to a problem with the outdoor unit.
