View Full Version : Why Is It - EER v SEER v HSPF

Ding dangit... It never dawned on me that my new high efficiency heatpumps wouldn't qualify for the frickin' tax credit! <insert bad words here>

I'm very close to inking the deal on two Amana ASZ16 heatpumps. Figured out yesterday that they don't qualify. SEER=16, EER=12.5, HSPF=9.

How is it that it beats the SEER minimum, meets the HSPF minimum, but fails to make the grade for EER???

Man, that's $500, down the tubes for a measly 0.5 EER, which wouldn't even EXIST except that I'm using a heatpump instead of an A/C-furnace... http://www.herfersparadise.net/portal/modules/Forums/images/smiles/cry.gif http://www.herfersparadise.net/portal/modules/Forums/images/smiles/cry.gif http://www.herfersparadise.net/portal/modules/Forums/images/smiles/cry.gif http://www.herfersparadise.net/portal/modules/Forums/images/smiles/cry.gif

Some two stage units are decieving. I'd rather have a high EER than SEER in a hot area.

EER is measured at 80 indoor air 95 outdoor air running continuosly.

SEER is measured by using the EER above and calculating in a factor for the unit running under a lighter load cycling on and off at 80 indoor and 82 outdoor.

Funny thing is on two stage units the SEER test is done on the low speed (on two speed compressors) and the EER is done on High speed. The two speed compressors in high SEER systems seem to have a lower EER than a single stage system meeting the minimum SEER.

I don't think there are many heat pumps at all that qualify for the rebate.

There is an ASZ18 coming soon (that I'm waiting to see specs on) that I'm hoping gets over the hump.

That's true, few heat pumps make all 3 requirements and most that do are single stage. The Bryant/Carrier 2 stage units get it in some matches, Nordyne can get it with a "13 SEER" heat pump however! VS blower and the right evap gets 15 SEER, 9.15 HSPF, 13 EER. A few XP19 models did.

I saw very few A-S/Trane and only single stage.

Did look like some of the SSZ models did. Only 1 ASZ model did, a 4 ton with air handler!
