I have a 3 ton and a 2 ton 16i trane heat pumps in my new house. The problem I am having is when I am having electrical power outages in my area. The 3 ton system must have been running while I was at work yesterday and the power would flicker on/off several times.(I saw this when I first arrive home). When i arrived home, the 3 ton system would try to come on but the compressor would surge very loud and shut off within 5-7 seconds. I checked the amp draw and the compressor starts pulling 60 amps and then reduces down to approx. 20 amps or so then shuts down. it would retry this every 5 min. or so until I shut the power off. The 2 ton does not have any problem at all (may not have been running during power problems). Anyway, I am replacing the compressor(all capacitors are ok) . What can I do to prevent this from happening again? Ive thought about a house surge protector but have been told this would not help . Any suggestions????? Thanks in advance.

u can put a superco surge protector on your disconect goes on the load side to protect the load. i put them in on many of my new installs with my dads company. i also belive that superco does make them for the whole panel for the house but would cost alot more. also there is a little green light that stays on when power is applied if it ever goes out it has taken a hit and need to be replaced. If the product ever fails to do its job they will pay like up to 3,000 dollars or something to that effect. Hope this helps, sry if stuff is miss spelled i suck at spelling

Did you do any other diagnostics on the compressor?
Specifically, did you try starting it up with the start kit completely disconnected?
I ask because I have seen a shunted coil in the potential relay cause the compressor to behave as you describe.

if you had a power problem and the compressor was off/on repeatidly it might have just been to hott, ive seen compressors cool down overnight once in a while and come out of lock rotor
