If your really wanting to go that direction, You would want pipefitters 597 if your doing service work.

this may be a lil bit far for you but theres a local 597 right off of I-80 just outside of Joliet, good place to start.

The only thing I would add is to be sure that you know how much union membership will cost you (initiation and dues) and what you get out of it when retirement comes around.

All unions are not equal. Nor does union membership guarantee employment.

Algonquin.... I lived in this area for many years before moving to New Mexico 20 years ago.
I was union sheet metal local 265 out of Carol Stream and ran service for Shermans P&H in Crystal Lake. Most of the service guys there were sheet metal but there were some fitters also. They mostly cared about ability and not which local you were.
Don't know if they are around anymore.

Hello All, Sorry my first post is negative, But if you are looking to join a Union in Illinois and you do Service, I would not recommend SMW Local 73, They have no interest in Service Techs and other than Testing and Balancing and perhaps Welding offer very little in the way of training. You can never make Journeyman regardless of how long you have been a Tech or the amount of classes you have taken , 70% of Journeyman scale is your top pay unless your employer will pay overscale , I have spoken to both our old and new President on this subject but it fell on deaf ears, Lest this turns into a rantI will close.

Local 265 has the same rate for service and sheet metal.
