Best of luck, let me know how you make out.

I caught Frank on his cell today. He explained that he has five guys waiting for work, and of course that roster has to work before I could go out. It's the late warming in our area.

I have answered ads and gotten no response, and I have been beating on Trane's door in K of P, but word is right now only a "c mech" job is up. Frank explained what that job is, but I want to make sure I can advance beyond that. I was making four dollars more than that rate when my boss closed his doors three weeks ago.

I'm looking for commercial RTU service work, but if it's good union job, I can be flexible.

Five guys wont take long to place. You can advance from a "C" guy. If you took that position I would make sure your employer knows your intentions and they agree with the advancement. In a few weeks they will be looking for regular techs.

The annual bench sitters will be doing their summer rounds soon. These are the same people that sit the bench every year until contractors need warm bodies.

I also made use of the list of Philadelphia area mechanical contractors. I sent an email to Goldner and got an email back from the COO, who said he would forward my info to his service manager, and I sent one to Fluidics, and a woman forwarded it to two guys there, with a CC to me.

All on a Saturday. I was surprised.

If I talk to Bill Dial I will make my desire to move up clear, at the outset.

I got a hold of Frank after he ran an ad in the paper that was posted in this thread. One contractor said not to worry about 420, that if they wanted me they would call Frank and it would be a done deal.

Wish I knew more about the intrigue, but after the United Rubber Tile and Nuclear Workers, the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, I can tell you that a whole lot of BS could be afoot anywhere you go.

Took a three hour written test today at 420.

It isn't often I feel that a test, any kind of test, takes a lot out of me. This one did.

I think the biggest part was the amount of info being asked for on the test that I have not found to be needed for most service work.

The funny part is this: you don't get to find out how you did. In fact, they call it a "survey" of ability, with the idea being that it helps them to evaluate someone for employment.

Update:

While they don't give out the test scores, I just talked with the guy at 420 and he said I did "half decent," which is a pleasant surprise for me because I had no idea of what would be on the test.

With a couple semesters of classroom work, I could ace the thing, but it's not easy to just walk in off the street and feel good about that challenge.

So, I now wait for other guys to be picked up off the bench as the weather warms up.

No mention of school, perhaps because that test was pretty comprehensive. I had asked about the apprentice program early on, and he said I probably wouldn't be interested because of the time frame (five years) and the pay (much lower than the rate I had last earned). During the call today, he mentioned another "c mech" position at another location, and I explained that it was several dollars less than my most recent rate, and I would wait for his call as the weather warmed up.

I would, however, take full advantage of any training opportunities. I'm a sponge for that kind of stuff, because my motto is "work smarter, not harder." Right now, I'm reading up on chillers and VFD's.

I'd like to ask you about the test (I'm scheduled to take the 420 test next month) and how it's been going for you over the past year since you last posted on this thread. Please write me at spamityspamneggs@yahoo.com if you don't mind.

Man this is crazy, I'm paying for school right now to get my HVAC-R certifcate and it seems that's not going to be useful once I get out there because all these jobs are asking for 3-5 years of experience, and this union stuff just takes more and more money from you it's crazy, anyone out here by the Philadelphia are that needs a helper?

It's seems you had no problem possibly paying a tech school a few tens of thousands in dollars for your HVACR education. In a Local, for example you'll pay dues plus a working assessment. That's not bad considering you'll be paid at least 50% of the HVACR Service Journeyman (not sure what the Local calls it up there, maybe "A Card/Service") as a 1st year Apprentice. In Philly, that's about $23/Hr. Try getting that from your typical non-Union company.
