How are service mechanics compensated for being on-call at different companies?
Presently, we're "on-call" for one week at a time on a rotating schedule between all of the service guys. The guy "on-call" is responsible for any after hours or weekend calls that come in. Of course, we get paid overtime to respond to an on-call service call, which would include OT for all travel time portal to portal.
Being service mechanics, we realize someone has to be on-call at all times for emergency calls, but what is the typical compensation for the inconvenience of being on-call? Anyone getting anything extra, other than, some additional OT? It should be worth something. The local and national contracts don't allow for anything other than you're on your own to negotiate it.

:( do you answer the phone much during the week?
you're lucky to have a job here...
I used to get 2 X 1.5 hrs per week. If I was on the phone much, it got charged to a job.
at a resi company, I wrote down the time if I was on the phone more than 1/2 hr at a time, but got away from resi because of the no calls until 5:30 p.m. when everyone gets home from work and discovers no heat.:(
now I get about 1 hr. pay per week I'm on call, plus 1.5 for OT calls. I keep telling them they need to charge 2X on Sundays....

that is how we do it...nothing extra for babysitting the pager...but we only get maybe 1-2 calls a month...9 guys rotating for the state.

0 here, the call rotates every week, it goes from me, to myself then to I. lol
We haven't gotten too many calls (maybe a couple after hours, half usually wait until the next day). But they are going to start advertising service much more, so I'm sure it'll go up from there... I just hope they have plans for someone else to help out on call... I'm already at the point when the phone rings I cringe lol.

Our company just implemented a formal "call" rotation about 3 weeks ago. We get 2 hours straight time pay (including benefits) for carrying the pager and OT/DT for after-hours work.

The company I'm with pays a 10 hour straight time incentive for being on call. Goes from Wed. to Wed. Anything over 40 is time and a half and weekends are double time.
I'm scheduled on call 8 times this year. I have already worked one for a co-worker so will be 9 thus far.

2 hours o.t. pay for standing by + o.t. pay for any hours worked over 40.
no o.t. pay for classroom time or hollidays. (eg. 40 hours field time + 8 hours classroom or holliday, + 3 hours on call time = 48 hours straight time + 3 hours o.t. for hours worked + 2 hours o.t. for standing by)

$75. for the week. $75 for a holiday, 4 hour minimum O.T. if called out. If you were too tired to come in the next day, you lost the O.T. to straight time. A Blue Friday changed that. Also fourteen hours out and you were finished for 10 hours, just to dangerous to work like that. We also forced the management to study the call types, and this stopped a lot of the calls caused by our guys. We did computer rooms and got a lot of calls. We were on first week Sat. / Sun. / Wed. Next week Mon. / Thurs. Final week Tues. / Fri. for our rotation.

i like the mandatory rest period. not only does a guy become unproductive when he is wiped out, but as you stated, the job can become extremely hazardous.

I get €125 = 75 after the tax is payed for a 24/7, OT payed plus travel.150% Saterday 200% Sundays, Tax is easely 40%. [ i live in a expencive country :D ].Tax is payed before i get the money !
The job i got now has a special arrangment, i have to be able to get there any hour of the day when on call, within 30minuts [15 min. drive]. That more or less means house arrest ! To compensate that, i can charge an extra 4 Sunday hours, witch will be booked as a check-round.:)

With my company we are on call about one weekend per year, during the week there is a manager on call and he starts calling service techs until someone will run the call. They usually call whoever has the account. The on call tech for the weekends has to respond to any call the on call manager gives him. We get 5 hours straight time pay for being on call from Friday evening to Monday morning and whatever overtime you have for calls that you run.

We get $15.00 or 1 hour vacation per call ran and the overtime pay including travel to and back. If you get no calls, then you get nothing, but if you have a busy week, it can add up. We are on call every 4 weeks for a week.

uA516 we get 8 hours rt for being on call, plus any overtime associated with after hours calls. Overtime rates are time and a half for first 3 hours after 8 hrs and double time after that, Sats are time and a half for first 3 hours, or until 5:00 pm which ever comes first, after that its double time until 7:00am Monday. We do only market work so the hours pile up in a hurry. I'm on call every third week.

We get one hour of OT a day just to carry the pager. $68/day x 7 days. Minimum call out is 3 hours OT, most guys hit them for 4 hours. It worth just under $500 a week to be on call. That is if there are no calls. M ore $$$ if there are alot of calls.

We get 13 hrs strait time for the week which is $494. 1 hour for each day Mon to Fri and 4 for each Sat and Sun. If we don't go out we get it. If we go out on a given day and it exceeds the on call time allotted for that given day we don't get it, we just get the OT pay.

Not long ago we went to 5 hrs OT (time and a half) unless a call came after 3pm, then you loose the pay. Work is paid at time and a half regardless of how much or how long you work...except holidays (2x pay). We used to get 7.5 hrs if we got a call or not, time and a half untill midnight then double time, double time on Sunday, and triple time on holidays...plus a meal if we worked past 8pm. None of the crew was very happy when the change was announced.:(

My company dont offer crap for being on call. And if you dont have over 40 hours you dont get any OT pay regardless of how late you worked. I have decided that if i have to work all night i am not going to sleep in late, i will go in as usual and if my quality lacks and something is said about it than it will open the door for discussion of the overtime pay.

My company has the best on call setup of any I have worked for. $230 for the week, 1.5 time for calls monday through saturday, double time for sunday, and triple for holidays. On weekly rotation every 16-18 weeks (about three times per year). Strictly commercial. You only get calls during busy months (june, january). The only drawback is the answering service calls the tech, then after twenty minutes of no response, calls the manager. You don't want the manager calling you.
1 hr per day mon-fri , 2 hrs per sat, sun. 1.5 OT after 3 PM mon-fri, 8 hrs minimum 1.5 OT on sat., 8 hrs minimum 2 OT on sun.We have call screeners. Get about 8-10 rotations per year. OT calls only emrgency calls from contract customers(commercial only).

I just changed jobs. My old job was 1 week rotations with no incentive except for 1.5 for anything billed over 40 that is approved for overtime by customer. With new job things are much better. We have 1 week rotations, $100 on call pay, double time for anything over 10 a day and on Sundays.

Here in UA local 638 land it varies from shop to shop... so at my present shop it is $80.00 (in the petty cash envelope) for Monday to Friday or Saturday 8am: to Monday 8am: ... then the local contract prevails... portal to portal for after work hours unless you were already out. And minimum 8 hours O.T. for week-end or holiday calls with 1.5x for Saturday and non holiday weekdays
2 x for Sunday and 2.5x for national holidays.
and there is a lot of O.T. made over six figures with the O.T last year ... and it is keeping up to par this year too.

we take it 6 or 7 weeks a year and only get paid if we go out, time and a half or double time depending on the day and time. BUT if you refuse to be on call you have to find another employer.
