I heard this on Air America yesterday morning and had to laugh. If the same group that used to practice ritual sacrifice and cannibalism on this site thinks that the mere presence of Bush necessitates purification, that really says something about how respected this administration is worldwide. Ouch.
Mayan priests will purify a sacred archaeological site to eliminate "bad spirits" after President Bush visits next week, an official with close ties to the group said Thursday.
"That a person like (Bush), with the persecution of our migrant brothers in the United States, with the wars he has provoked, is going to walk in our sacred lands, is an offense for the Mayan people and their culture," Juan Tiney, the director of a Mayan nongovernmental organization with close ties to Mayan religious and political leaders, said Thursday.[..]
Tiney said the "spirit guides of the Mayan community" decided it would be necessary to cleanse the sacred site of "bad spirits" after Bush's visit so that their ancestors could rest in peace. He also said the rites - which entail chanting and burning incense, herbs and candles - would prepare the site for the third summit of Latin American Indians March 26-30.

Man, ya'll will swallow anything.
Another part of the story explaining this "leaders" reasoning goes something like this:
Youth leader Jorge Morales Toj said Bush's presence in Guatemala was offensive to the nation's ethnic Mayan people because of US support to military governments during the country's 1960-96 civil war.
Was Bush president from 1960-96? I would say we had quite a few presidents in that 36 year time frame.
These are "activists" that hate US--America. And people like you joining the bandwagon just gives them more ammunition.
These were some more of their comments:
"We reject this portrayal of our people as a tourist attraction," said Morales Toj, head of a national Mayan youth movement.
"We will burn incense, place flowers and water in the area where Mr. Bush has walked to clean out the bad energy," he said.
The activists also criticised massive deportation sweeps in the United States, where many poor Mayans live and work without papers.
I would guess, since Guatemalan President Oscar Berger is to be along for the festivities that THEY planned this against the activists wishes.

I have always admired the Maya people. From their magnificent ancient cities, their mathematical and astronomical discoveries to their growing political sophistication, they have remained a people true to their origins while looking to the future.
I wonder if they would consider performing these rites here.
Without this purification, the stink and decay of the Bush administration will plague us for years.

Hey, the fact remains, that the people of these countries consider BUSH the evil one, that is something no one can deny.. Can they accuse their leaders of effing up the "free world"? probably not. But then again, perhaps BUSH is there to confirm another "energy alliance", considering the fact that most ethanol producers use sugar cane grown in South America... Hmm....
Yeah, BUSH is just on another fact finding mission, a mission to see how profitable he can meake his cronies in the future energy market.
(because we all know that reliance on petroleum products is going to be on the, shall we say, downward spiral?)
I guess it's another good reason why I run my work truck on Biodiesel, which is produced by Americans, 100%...
