I can only assume that you are attending "Buy Mark"...do yourself a favour, after completing your G2, enrol in George Brown for pre apprenticeship training...

actually himark is alot better now, they have a guy there who really knows what he is doing and talking about. The problem with himark is that the course is very compressed so not enough time, but either way, I know guys who went to himark, GB and some school in oakville and they all have one thing in common when they come out, they know nothing about the real world of gas fitting or hvac...those schools teach you the safetys of gas and thats pretty much it, infact I worked with a guy who graduated from GB and he didnt even know how to take manifold pressure so go figure. My advice is to 'cold call' when you are done and show some initiative and that is how you will get your first job. I did that as an electrical apprentice as well as a HVAC/R apprentice and got jobs in both fileds in matter of weeks.

Why? I've seen tons of talented technicians who attended Hi Mark.

thats actually a great remark shaun, let me see...what is the practical exam at GB for the G3..oh yeah wire up 3 light bulbs in series and what is the practical at 'buymark' let me think real hard about this one..oh yeah, its too wire up a furnace from scratch with no schematic or drawings..try that when you have no knowledge of this field or elecrtrical knowledge at that.

Hey thanks for all the help guys…I have been going through the yellow pages and calling a lot of companies seeing if they need a helper but they all say the something which is we are very slow at this time and that’s I should call back end of the month.

Out of 100 companies that I have contacted. I got one interview A1 air conditioning and heating in Oakville the interview went well they are looking for someone with experience and helper but he has to hire the exp person first than the helper. I was told buy the manager that ones he finds a experience person than he will give a call.

When is the best month to look for a job?

Sudden cold snaps and heat waves are perfect times to look for jobs.

Most companies in the Toronto area are slow due to recent mild temperatures.

I wish we were slow due to weather, just got home, 3 weeks, no day off.

I dont think they have that Pre-Apprenticeship coarse at Gerorge Brown.

If it is still available i will go right now and enrol, just tell me the coarse code, who to contact etc... To my understanding you have to have a company thats willing to sponsor or sign you up as an apprentice then you can be enrolled.

Its tough looking for work when you have not much experience.

Ask your teacher at GB. I know that sometimes companies will pick up co-op students who ride along with guys on jobs. I've heard some companies will let them work along with the mechanics. Personally I wouldn't let them touch a tool; just pull up a milk crate and watch. Too much liability.
Anyway, you may want to go around to some of the suppliers and talk with the counter people. Look at their bulletin boards. Sometimes a good opportunity comes up there.

No sense in slagging the various schools. It's all in the teachers hands. You can get a bad one even at the union hall.
