I want to ask you guys a question.
Many people recommend Engenuity for buying controls, but I find their pricing absolutely brutal compared to other sources. Am I missing something here?

Unless you have logged on, you're likely seeing list prices. If you're a reseller, you get better pricing and the more you buy the better the discount.

I tried that, but didn't see much of a break. Only about $ 25.00 on a $ 575.00 controller.
BTW Lonboy.....are you doing any training in L.A. or O.C. ?

Call Engenuity and talk to Becky, tell her you're a starving contractor guy.
I also understand that the legendary John Cain, a former Circonian, is now working for Engenuity along with his faithful companion Ted. Very knowledgeable and helpful gents plus they bought me a beer once.
I might do a dog and pony show at the upcoming LonMark tour stop in LA in May but it will be short. I am negotiating with ELON to do some training for them in SanJose in May - we'll see......
Cheers,

"Cheers" - Very Canadian of you.
With John and Ted at Engenuity I am hoping they straighten out the offerings and pricing. I've noted a change already, but they have a way to go. They have to solidify their offering of programmables and get down to basics on the ASC controllers, valves and sensors.
I envision their lineup shrinking a bit in the future which may be a good thing.

Wisconsin for me.
When you think about it, Lonworks products of all types can be had for reasonable pricing with no locked in vendor agreements. That would be additional soft-costs. You just buy the product and go...

Sysint you are headed in the right direction. Manufacturer alliances are fast becoming a thing of the past when it comes to buying networked control devices and peripheral products. Our best bet for pricing and selection will be based on a distribution alliance in the future. Talk about volume buying power at its best! Sheer numbers tell us the obvious that the volume pool through distribution is far deeper than through any direct manufacturer. Once Engenuity gets the programmable controllers side of the equation worked out, as well as the support and training components, they will be an unstoppable force to be reckoned with.

Engenuity went to a structured pricing plan a few years ago. Pricing on the site, and subsequent first-time buyers do pay a higher price than those that buy a decent amount annualy. I recall the discussions that went on over there (pre- Becky and everyone else, except Tracy, basically) and the heart-wrneching that went on to try and make the distribution side profitable (wasn't very much so for a looong time, previously heavily reliant on OEM sales).
The margins became rediculous for a while, but have since, apparently, leveled off to a reasonable amount.
Like was said, you can negotiate better pricing sometimes and on some things. It's the International products that'll kill ya... in shipping.
Wonder if my login still works LOL.
Speaking of Becky... she married that guy??? I'd not heard good things about him. Never met her, though, but I did hear that she's not only smart as a whip, but also definitely easy on the eyes.

Glenn,
Edit your post about the "guy she married". You don't want to be sued for libel.
Anyway, thanks for the info. It still makes it difficult to buy from them. Take a look at Kele. Everybody gets the same price - but at least it makes sense. They are competitive with others.

No need to edit. What I heard is, at best/worst, hearsay and not grounds for anything. Heck, could be a different guy that she married, even. Besides that... I just don't care.
I agree... it can be daunting to see the pricing at times. And I also agree that it can shy folks away from getting in to LON if the big "sell to anyone" shop has pricing like that. That was something I mentioned back then, but don't recall the reasoning, other than what the actual costs were, as to why it decided to show that pricing.
Some companies they buy from don't give any break, even to them, unless the quantities are there. Many just aren't used to distribution or value-add resalers and don't have pricing that can handle that.

As far as I know lon is something I had to mow last week and gonna have to mow again this week. And where can I buy a 575 dollar controller that I can plug into my system?
Who knows in a few months I might be thinking lon too.......
I don't know who Becky is but now I have a mental picture.... :-)
