isitfixedyet: im not sure if u ever read any of my posts but a little info on me..
i graduated trade school in 2005, hvac certified, epa certified. i did install as a helper for about 6 months and got laid off( but my position was taken by the owners nephew), had a hard time finding work so i did side jobs and did the temp jobs thing, did landscaping , and now i work for a hvac supplier in chicago northside. i have been there for 7 months now in the warehouse as a order picker. the pay is descent but no growth for a blue collar worker.. i see that you are from chicago as well, and you might know that the weather is weird. so work is busy off and on..my question is, what tips can i use to get back in the field meaning to impress an employer. i hit some shops , i will give them a call on monday to find out my status..or any advice would help, im looking to get a install helper or apprentice service tech position.i have hand tools and some sheet metal tools, and power tools, im trying to get a manometer, new gauges, ampmeter, for service....i attend the classes they give to keep my mind fresh

Ask your employer, if he can gget u a counter position , when one opens, up or when one comes available, and if he could train you whil it is slow so when it gets busy he can use u as a smotth transition or a make a better transition, and that you are looking for a opportunity,,, if thats what u are looking for?

If u definately want to get out in the field, in residential field theres no real
stability as to a forty hour work week year round unless ur the bosses pet and senior tech, and u r family close frinds, and or been their awhile,,, or theyre super busy year round large customer base?

My recommendation is if you want to get into a year ound go somwhere position there, go union, go register with a union, check the supply houses, ask for what unions do what type of trades, then go from there and register, while youre working, then when its time to make the jump, jump and make the smooth transition, although it may be rocky at first it will get better, all jobs everywhere have their probs and drawbacks and benefits too!

theres alot of shops that are union there!
try that, but if u want to get out fast as an order selector, then
call some companies or visit them in the afternoons or on slow days, when u can schedule interviews to talk to the owners or contractors of residential companies!

good luck installers and techs are usually two deperate unions, not always

u may also want to try illinoisskillsmatch.com or something like that their in the phone book,,,
theres alot of shop s willing to train a new guy or have ongoing paid training as a benefit, those are the ones and the tool replacement bennies are the companies that see a tech as a asset or benefit to the company long term as well! and u dont ahve to tell your employer or the contractor of the other in the begininng as to your plans,, until ur ready to!
good luck! let me know, the havcr bus is a tight community somplaces sometimes so keep a heads up! on who needs to know what! or who!

I was kind of wondering the same thing. I live in St.louis where it is always warmer and we haven't seen anything close to 70. I think he is smoking crack.

Actually, if I remember correctly, it seems as though I have read some of his post and he mentioned that he was from the southwest. Maybe Phoenix or Las Vegas or something. If this is the case I don't know why it says that his location is Chicago, unless he just moved.

Welcome to the real America - and not the fake, idealised dream propagated by the media, the crypto-fascist government currently controlled by neo-conservatives (and not TRUE conservatives) like George W.
