You're working on a self-contained display cooler,or beer cooler. You know the type, the suction line is coiled in the back, and the condensing unit slides out, uncoiling the coil. The unit is old, and you know the tubing is work- hardened. You know the danger that lies within. You're so damn careful, because you've had an incident or two (or more) in your career.
Easy....easy....you keep checking out the loop.
You pull some more...so far so good.
Almost there.
Then...the sound you were afraid of.
SSSSSSSSSSssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss sssssssssssssss
ARRRGGGGGHHHH!
Happened today. I knew the danger. I thought about it before I pulled the condensing unit. I only pulled it about 3".
Customer asks..."what's the problem?"
"Er...your unit has a leak."

I hate it worse when the boss has called cause your backed up and you tell him you should be ok cause it is just a fan motor and you swap out the fan motor and it breaks on the way back in!!!!!!!! 1 hour call to a 3 hour call in the blink of an eye and you know he told your next customer you would be there in an hour or so!

I wish the manufacturers could simply make arrangements for service.
Has anyone here worked on QBD stuff out of Canada. They use to be the manufacturer of R/I's for Tim Horton's. Now they use a place out of Columbus Ohio, which basically copied the designs and sell it with their name. S & G Manufacturing. Reach In's just like were talking but Hard Piped. You actually have to pump it down and cut it out to change a 9 watt condenser fan motor.

Yeah, you're absolutely right. The only thing worse than having it happen on the way out, is when you complete your repair, looking forward to going home or to the next call, and it happens on the way back in. :(
And there's not a thing you can do about it. I'll usually try to access the back if at all possible, but most of the time, like a beer cooler in a bar, it's chuck full, glued to the floor, with about 18" clear space in front of it, so she's not moving anywhere.

On occasion I've pushed the unit back in after changing a fan motor, and had trouble because the tubing is work hardened and not coiling like it should.
And she kinks a little.
And I get the unit back in, with a kink. Round it off as best as I can. The unit is still pulling temp. Suction line at the compressor is still cool, so it must not be restricting too bad. And I collect my money and go, because I have 4 more calls to go and I'm not gonna spend the next 2-1/2 hours recovering, repiping and recharging. And the customer is Middle Eastern, and he already thinks the bill is too high.
So, now the unit is booby trapped. Just waiting for the next guy to slide her out.

I had to change a faulty dual pressure switch on a new 3 door self contained Zero Zone freezer. This thing was made with such a design that I just moved out the whole case in the middle of the isle to avoid all that. Compressor on left, and condensor in the middle. I think they were supposed to slide out individually at the same time. what a pain.

I know what you mean! In the past if i have had the refrigeration system open on these boxes, weither its a reach in or a chest (like a beer box) i will braze on some access ports that stick out the front close to the condenser coil. of course this isn't going to help you change that fan motor but at least if you want to get your gauges on there with out sliding everything out you can.
I found that true reach in's that are low on refrigerant and i can not find a leak any where when i stretch that coil out i find it in the coil. And a couple of times I have had the condenser out and no leak put when i slide it back the leak shows up on the coiled up pipe.
seeing that i work on those c/u with the tubing all coiled up in the back,i made a little tool, to push the coil back, get a broom handle end, or an old bathroom plunger stick, drill a 1/8 inch hole in the top, take one of those little s hooks out of your bungy cord and pound it in yer hole, now when your ready to slide that baby back in just hook the s hook around the suction coil and push ever so gently the same time as you are pushing the c/u back in.and yer done.it works trust me i have cracked more than my fair share of worked harden tubing, pia.:D

Worth a try i guess.. I got into that on a 3 door hussman stand up freezer on a friday at 4.. unit was running warm -7 ish but warm after defrost. So i pull it out like 3 inchs and she kinks.. DAMN.. SO i pushed it back in and i pulled a defrost pin and let it fly for the weekend :p

You guysmust only see the old equipment from QBD? I dont think they have used that design in a Tim Hortons in 6-7 years. Your talking about the cake display coolers right? The new style just pulls out in about 2 min. But I must say that i have seen one of them before. I just had to pull the gas out of it so they could chuck it into the dumpster :) The new Hortons dont use that cooler anymore. Maybe the US Tim Hortons just gets the best of the old crap for now lol.

after all that you now have to plug the condenser back into the spider I carry a couple of short {24") AC extension cords. Pick them up at hardware store. Saves needing exta elbow.
