British Officials May Take Custody of Extremely Overweight Boy
By COURTNEY FRENCH
Associated Press Writer
(AP) 03:51:04 PM (ET), Monday, February 26, 2007 (LONDON)
Authorities are considering taking an 8-year-old boy who weighs 218 pounds into protective custody unless his mother improves his diet, officials said Monday.
Social service officials will meet with family members Tuesday to discuss the health of Connor McCreaddie, who weighs more than three times the average for his age.
"The worst case would be Connor getting taken into care. He is well cared for," the boy's mother, Nicola McKeown, told ITV television.
A spokeswoman for health officials in Wallsend, North Tyneside, 300 miles north of London, said the hearing was part of a process that could eventually lead to Connor being taken into protective care. She declined to comment further.
The health agencies organizing the meeting said they "have been working with the family over a prolonged period of time and will continue to do so."
Officials would not say whether Connor suffered from a medical condition that led to his obesity, citing privacy issues.
An unidentified health official was quoted as telling The Sunday Times that taking custody of Connor would be a last resort, but said the family had repeatedly failed to attend appointments with nurses, nutritionists and social workers.
"Child abuse is not just about hitting your children or sexually abusing them, it is also about neglect," the official was quoted as saying.
Dr. Colin Waine, the director of the National Obesity Forum in Nottingham, England, called Connor's lifestyle "extremely dangerous," adding he is at risk of developing diabetes in his early teens, and cardiovascular and nervous system problems in his 20s.
"He's really at risk of dying by the time he's 30," Waine said.
Dr. Michael Markiewicz, a pediatrician, agreed.
"I'm not saying they can't care for him, but what they are doing is through the way they are treating him and feeding him, they are slowly killing him," he said.
Connor's case attracted national attention after his mother allowed an ITV News crew to film his day-to-day life over the course of a month.
Connor's mother said he steals and hides food, frustrating her efforts to help him. He eats double or triple what a normal seven-year-old would have, she said.
"If I didn't give him enough at teatime then he would just go on at us all night for snacks and stuff," she told ITV.
Connor, who lives with his mother and sister, has difficulty dressing and washing himself, misses school regularly because of poor health, and is targeted by bullies.
"People pick on us because of my weight. They call us fat. It makes us feel sick of the nutters always shouting at us," Connor told ITV.

Poor kid.:(
The family should be made to see a nutritionist and enforced by social services, before society has to support him the rest of his life because he cant get his fat ass off the couch.

His problems are emotional in nature and are likely caused by abuses that go beyond neglect.

Rather simplistic in your approach, don't you think?
Overeating, lethargy and complacency are symtoms of other problems, many which are emotional and not physiological in nature. DOH!
I hope you're an installer and not a technician in the hvac/r trade.
If you're a tech, your boss is pissing his money away.

Is this your personal experience? I am well aware of the sociological problems that are facing todays youth, and it detriments. But it does seem to me, that todays kids are getting fatter and fatter all the time. I don't remember this many fat kids when I was young. Speaking of Fat, I also notice that more and more Americans are obese. Are these also related to the conditions you descibed above?

Whats this supposed to mean? Typically installers make a company much more money than a service tech. Why would my boss be pissing his money away? What do you know about my profesional skills? Whats wrong with being an installer? Whats wrong with being a Tech? Heck whats wrong if you do both?
Are you trying to make some half assed personal attack upon me?If so, thats a pretty weak one, Cheif.

Oh, a joke it was. I don't see the humor in an abused young boy acting out and eating himself to an early death. Apparently, you can find some humor there.
Is this your personal experience?
Is what my personal experience? Being perceptive enough to assess human problems takes a certain amount of skill, compassion, logic and experience, so yes, I guess it is personal.
My awareness of abuse is much more heightened than most people's, especially those who would joke about it rather than address the issue in a serious fashion.
I am well aware of the sociological problems that are facing todays youth, and it detriments. But it does seem to me, that todays kids are getting fatter and fatter all the time. So, you're aware of the problem and it's a joke? I take the matter seriously. You got a problem with that?
Simply put, kids are much more inactive today than they were in the past.
That along with the combination of dysfunction and abuse that is prevalent in non-family and family units exacerbates the problem.
Whats this supposed to mean?
I was noting your apparent lack of diagnostic skills as it relates to human behavior and human problems and suggesting that if you didn't diagnose problems with more skill during the course of your job, you'd be a problem.
Sheesh
Typically installers make a company much more money than a service tech.
Who told you that?
Why would my boss be pissing his money away?
Because if you're a service tech and you can't diagnose simple problems you would be a liability. Duh.
What do you know about my profesional skills?
My only observations of you are contained in what you post on this forum.
You may be very productive and a true pro, but based on what I observe when I read your responses on this site, I'd bet against it.

Sheesh
So, you are saying that in order to properly diagnose a furnace or heat pump you need to also fully understand sociology and psycology? Hah, what a crock of sh!t!! Do you know how many "dumb as a box of rocks" service techs I know working out in the field? They are great at daignosing and repairing HVAC equipment, but outside of that, they don't know much else. Your reasoning is stupid.
Because if you're a service tech and you can't diagnose simple problems you would be a liability. Duh.
I probably would not last very long as a service tech. (although I have seen some idiots out there that still remain employed as such, and it still amazes me...)
My only observations of you are contained in what you post on this forum.
You may be very productive and a true pro, but based on what I observe when I read your responses on this site, I'd bet against it.
Hmm really? Do you think that someone who is not "into" HVAC would bother looking at a HVAC related web site? I would bet you that most of the people that check out this site are the ones, like you and me, that are most likely obsessed with our jobs, and love what we do. Who else would post on a job related message board if they hated their job? That having been said, I would say that you would loose that bet, if you even bother to wager it to begin with. And by your standards of reasoning (knowing how you have apparently studied Psycology and Sociology to the level that you must have a Masters or something, how else could one diagnose a furnace!!) you should have already known this, or perhaps you are just ignorant?
Who said anything was wrong with either?
Some people are simply better suited for digging ditches while some are better at telling them where to dig.
You must be one of those primadonna service techs out there that thinks that they are better than an installer... Thats pathetic, and usually no one in the shop really has any respect for that guy. And since when did a service tech tell an installer what to do? The shop I work for has some super smart installers that know as much if not more that alot of the techs. They install because they like it better than service (no on calls, no need to write up a bill, no haggeling with customers, and on and on) Your logic is flawed and irrational. But then again, I'll bet you are the primadonna...
Nah, all the half-assed attacks usually come from blokes like you.

Really? Bwahahaha. You're a funny guy Chief.. (English is my second language... And I do think that I am pretty good at it too, even though there are some spelling errors, but then again, I never use a spell checker or proof read...)
I do have other things to do, so I am not always sitting here "waiting for your reply"... I have a life outside the "internets", which aparently is very much unlike you...
Well, even if you are fat, you can always lose weight.

So, can I assume you're an installer with an axe to grind with service techs??
LOL
Let me clue you in ....chief.
I wear all the hats in my company. Not one of em' or two or threee....all of em'. And my company does very well thank you.
I don't have to sit around a shop and play the penis envy game that you seem to relish playing. And I sure as hell don't spend a bunch of time here as you seem prone to insinuating.
Understanding how things work and how control sequences are initiated and terminated is essential to my business and it's paramount to being successful.
To get a technical certification in service automatically qualifies me in install.
Did you know that chief??
Most competent service techs cut their teeth on installs, but let's face it, there has to be a graduation at some point for motivated individuals.
I don't know where you fit in as it relates to you employer, but my business would not survive without service expertise.
Proper design and installation is simply not a challenge for me anymore.
I'm not minimizing it's overall importance, but I do know what a challenge looks like when I see one.
If you can't see a correlation between diagnosing and solving life's problems and those in your daily work, well, I don't know what to tell ya'....chief.
Thin and good looking? Yeah OK, sure.
You had better have some attributes because intelligence and the English language aren't two of them.
Oh, and I guess you never learned man J loads or duct design either.
Probably don't have any licenses, certifications, or degrees either judging by your juvenile man j remark.
I have them all son. I'm secure, well read and learning more every day.
You apparently are a bitter young punk with no credentials to add to your library of mountain climbing boots. Sorry about your luck chief...or is it squaw?

So, can I assume you're an installer with an axe to grind with service techs??
LOL
Well I installed for almost 10 years, and then went on to work service. My axe to grind is with people that have an attitude about service techs being "superior" to an installer. I see this phenomenon occurring mostly among techs that never installed... And usually they are the biggest hacks when they try to install something!
Let me clue you in ....chief.
I wear all the hats in my company.
Good for you! I don't care about that.
I don't have to sit around a shop and play the penis envy game that you seem to relish playing. And I sure as hell don't spend a bunch of time here as you seem prone to insinuating.
Then why where you giving me guff about not "responding" to your post? Apparently you DO spend alot of time around here. Perhaps more than you realize. Penis envy? I envy nothing about your penis, let me assure you of that!
Understanding how things work and how control sequences are initiated and terminated is essential to my business and it's paramount to being successful.
To get a technical certification in service automatically qualifies me in install.
So you passed the "service" portions of a NATE exam. Whoop-dee-doo!! Yeah, that exam had about two to four install related questions. Yeah, that really qualifies someone...
Did you know that chief??
Yep sure did. Probably took the same exams you did.
Most competent service techs cut their teeth on installs, but let's face it, there has to be a graduation at some point for motivated individuals.
I don't know where you fit in as it relates to you employer, but my business would not survive without service expertise.
Well, not to say that service expertise is not important, but you know as well as I do, that you can make more money replacing equipment than repairing it. Of course SOME service techs. cut their teeth on installs, I know, I am one of those guys. But not all service guys are like that. And that ratio is shrinking more and more each day. It's a pretty sad scene when an installer has to come out and help a service tech replace a coil!! Half of the service techs I work with hadly know how to even how to use a pair of reds, let alone bend up a something as simple as a 20X20 peice of duct... It's as sad state when a tech cannot diagnose a airflow problem. I see it all the time.
Proper design and installation is simply not a challenge for me anymore.
I'm not minimizing it's overall importance, but I do know what a challenge looks like when I see one.
Once again, good for you!!
If you can't see a correlation between diagnosing and solving life's problems and those in your daily work, well, I don't know what to tell ya'....chief.
You know, I can. But I think that you are a jackass for saying that someone that does not see the all the psycological and sociological issues must not be able to diagnoe a simple electrical problem. They are perhaps related as far as analasys of things, and I guess that is fair, but don't make the assumption that just because YOU see things that way, that everone sees things that way. I just think that the kid is freakin' fat, and needs some attention from his parents regarding his diet. You see it as something entirely different. For all you know, the kid has a genetic disorder. It's not mine or your kid.
Thin and good looking? Yeah OK, sure.
You know it! You can admit it. I am too sexy for my shirt, ya know!
You had better have some attributes because intelligence and the English language aren't two of them.
I never claimed to be an English major. And as far as intelligence, I usually have you beat, hands down. Lame argument on your part.
Oh, and I guess you never learned man J loads or duct design either.
Probably don't have any licenses, certifications, or degrees either judging by your juvenile man j remark.
Oh I did, I just threw that one in there to get your goat. It worked!!
I have them all son. I'm secure, well read and learning more every day.
You apparently are a bitter young punk with no credentials to add to your library of mountain climbing boots. Sorry about your luck chief...or is it squaw?
Not bitter (why would I be?), I have credentials( which ones would you like me to list?), I am secure (Monitarily, Sexualy, and profesionally) I am not as young as you think (Guess my age), and I have a decent climbing resume (I am always working on that. It gets better as time goes on). It's not about luck, it's more about skill, and I apparently have both.

A service tech? You? "Here's my report boss, that kid is freakin' fat".
I can recognize an analytical mind when I see one...and you ain't one.
As for intelligence, I'm not keeping score with you. There's no need to point out the obvious. I've squashed your unsubstantiated rhetoric enough to know how I rate intellectually when compared to you. You rarely provide anything that comes close to substantiating your opinions and you are abysmally weak on politics and religion. That leaves America. I'd venture a guess that my 26 year old daughter has forgotten more about America than you've learned. The only tangible evidence we have of who understands and is understood better is on this forum. You got me on the religion part. I could give two shakes about religion, therefore I do not waste my time with that aspect of this forum. You blowhards can argue away about portions of your mythological book all you want, I could care less.
On the issue of politics, you just think that I am stupid, because you do not agree with my views. That does not attribute to someones inteligence, rather it is you spewing your bais and unwillingness to contemplate any sort of progressive ideals. Your loss not mine.
That leaves America. I'd venture a guess that my 26 year old daughter has forgotten more about America than you've learned.
Perhaps that is because you daughter is just as brainwashed as you are regarding what is truly "American"... Perhaps you could define (to you that is) what is American or America. This should be interesting to see what kind of rhetoric you are going to spew on this one.

Just for sheyts and giggles,(and if you have time to waste) go back and review wankers posts.
You'll laugh you arse off. He's long on opinion and speculation, but you can count the number of references to factual endorsement of his commie views on one hand. In fact, he's hung like an elevator button when it comes to relevant facts to support his opinions.
Transplanted from Europe, he attempts to engage in debate with Americans who have studied, mastered and practiced in this country their entire lifetimes. He attempts to tell us what's wrong with a country he almost broke his friggin' kneck to get to. Yet, if you hear him talk, Europe is doing so much better than the U.S.
His idea of an America he can be proud of is one that is governed by anti- Semites and Marxists where the rich are forced to abandon their wealth in favor of social programs for those who aren't predisposed to creating their own wealth.
His idea of religion is exactly as he stated. He knows nothing about it and isn't particularly interested in it, so it must be a "myth".
This type of ignorance is bliss. "Uh yeah, wanker here...I don't know what the hell you're talking about so it must be some type of fable or something"
One could even ask him, 'Why did you come to America'?
I already know the answer...
Because it's the land of opportunity.
Had this dude not come here, he would still be living in Germany with a snake up his arse about his fellow Nazi's and the fact that Israel "exists".
That lady standing out there in NY Harbor is going to fall and bust her ass if the likes of wanker continue to be allowed to come here and thrive as a boil on the butt of this country.
