Would there be enough difference in cost savings ( operating costs ) to justify a 2 stage heat pump vs a regular heat pump with a variable speed air handler if both were the same approx. seer and hpf?

The difference in cost of the units is approx. $ 1,500.

if all you are worrying about is justifying cost you will never be happy,

but as far as comfort and humidity removal you cant beat the 2 speed!

If they are the same SEER, and HSPF, then one won't save you money over the other.

Some people do set their thermostat a degree or 2 warmer in the summer with 2 stage units because of the better humidity removal. So you could see a small savings, but not enough to recover that much of a cost difference, in the life span of the unit.

2 stage is for comfort.
