If there is anyone interested in being a DDC Technician in the Los Angeles area at a Major California University click the following link.

http://www.chr.ucla.edu/cjo/html/listings/20070214.html

After clicking the link scroll down to Maintenance/Crafts then click on the job title SERVICE ENGINEER (8745)

We are looking for experienced technicians to fill this position preferably on Siemens Apogee systems. If you don’t have experience with Siemens you will still be considered based on your experience and controls background.

At this time there is one open position for Service Engineer. But I will be retiring in July of this year which should create another open position under the same title. I am told that they are thinking of doing something completely unheard of and that is to hire my replacement before I retire. That remains to be seen but it still might mean that there are really two open positions

If you are just starting out in the Controls field and don’t feel you have enough experience to work independently then click on one of the open STATIONARY OPERATING ENGINEER open positions and create your resume to reflect your controls background and skill level and your desire to be a DDC controls technician. You will be considered for one of the two open positions in the DDC Shop for Operating Engineers based on your controls experience and HVAC background.

Instructions on how to apply are included in the advertisements.

If you have any questions you can e-mail me at shif_ferbrains@yahoo.com

I am posting this e-mail address publicly only because I created it just for this purpose.

Hey Shiff,

I thought you guys were married to Siemens?

I did the control system in Plant Physiology Building. Are you guys still buying those ridiculous B & G VFD pumping systems?

Ohhh now you went and said the wrong thing.... I got those B&G packages kind of shoved down my throat. Lol they will even talk to the Siemens system if you buy the ten thousand dollar interface.... and that's after our sixty percent discount.

You did Plant Phys? I see it on System Profile all the time. I have never had the occasion to go take a personel look at it but I know it's there.

You should put in for one of our openings then maybe you could see it on our profile too.

Our marraige with Siemens seems to be doing fine at this point and we have one huge system... and it would be way to expensive to get a divorce now.

Those B & G packages are the dumbest things I ever saw. It took us forever to get the points to read back to the system. There are two pumps at Plant Phys. with this giant pumping package. When I opened the panel what do see inside? Two standard ABB VFD's. I remember talking to the engineer (great guy) and him explaining how the spec. was handed to him and created by that outfit in Santa Monica. After fiddling and fooling for so long I asked Joe (your Joe) how they got them to work before and he told me not one of them works on the site. What's up with that?

The system in Plant Phys. is actually by a company called Argus. They specialize in Greenhouse control systems. Working at your place is brutal. All of the pipe work had to be rigid. The electrical contractor went out of business during this project.

Sometimes I get calls to do work there. You will never get a divorce from Siemens. The retraining costs are too high. It's better to pay a premium for the controls than retrain (The premium is not that much relative to the construction costs for the building). And with you guys, money is no object during the bid phase.

I see that there has been over 230 hits on this announcement since I posted it. I have had no inquiries at the e-mail address I included. Except for Simsd I have had no replies to the post.

Has anybody sent in a resume for this position? Maybe some of you have applied and I am just not aware of it?

At this point I am wondering why there seems to be no interest in this job. Any insight would be appreciated.

You don't suppose it's because of the wonderful parking do you? Or the fact that you need to leave at 5:00 AM to be there at 7:00 AM? Or on Friday after 1:00 PM it takes 45 minutes to go from Westwood to the 405 - you could walk it in 10 minutes.

:-)

However - There is tons of eye candy - even though you're not supposed to look.

I've read it over and it sounds like it could be a good position; however I would not want to live in the LA area. Glad you posted it though - hopefully they find a good replacement.

Thanks for thinking of the people around here and I'd also assume that you'd get at least a few bites.

Granted, I'm an Iowa boy, but I have lived and worked in Chicago, Boston and DFW. Big cities on the coast(s) aren't my cup of tea - that would be my main reason for not sending in my app (and I have sent mine to a couple of facilities recently so it's not like I'm not considering opportunities either).

If you like urban living or living near the beach, this would be a great job. The Campus is beautiful and is in West L.A. near Bel Air, Westwood and Brentwood.

Not far from Santa Monica which is a great place. Ideal opportunity for a young guy, plus I think you get a deal on tuition if you want to pursue a degree. Great opportunity.

BTW, it's in a good part of L.A.
