Former high-ranking U.S. military officials plead for a diplomatic solution

LONDON - Three former high-ranking U.S. military officers have called for Britain to help defuse the crisis over Iran's nuclear program, saying military action against Tehran would be a disaster for the region.

In a letter to the Sunday Times newspaper, the three former officers urged President Bush to open talks, "without preconditions," with the Iranian government in a bid to find a diplomatic solution.

The signatories were retired Lt. Gen. Robert G. Gard, a senior military fellow at the Center for Arms Control and Nonproliferation in Washington, D.C.; retired Marine Gen. Joseph P. Hoar, former head of U.S. Central Command; and Vice Adm. Jack Shanahan, former director of the Center for Defense Information.

They said Britain "has a vital role to play in securing a renewed diplomatic push" and urged Prime Minister Tony Blair to make it clear he would oppose any military attack on Iran.

The officers said an attack "would have disastrous consequences for security in the region, coalition forces in Iraq and would further exacerbate regional and global tensions."

"The current crisis must be resolved through diplomacy," they said.

The United States and several Western allies believe that Iran is using its nuclear program as a cover to produce a nuclear weapon — charges Iran denies, saying its aim is to generate electricity. Last week a respected think tank, the International Institute for Strategic Studies, said Iran was likely two to three years from having the capacity to build a nuclear weapon.

The U.N. Security Council has imposed sanctions on Tehran, and threatened to impose more if it continues to refuse to roll back its nuclear program.

The U.S. government has refused to rule out military action if Iran does not halt its nuclear activities, and has beefed up the U.S. military presence in the Gulf. Bush also has vowed more aggressive moves against Iranian operatives in Iraq, where the United States accuses Iran of training and arming insurgents who attack U.S. troops.

In a separate letter, Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders called for a peaceful resolution to the crisis.

Writing to The Independent on Sunday newspaper, Rabbi Tony Bayfield, head of reform Judaism in Britain; Lord Harries, the former Anglican Bishop of Oxford; and Imam Abduljalil Sajid of the Brighton Islamic Mission said there was "no justification in international law for attacking Iran militarily and the use of force is not an option at this juncture."

"There is still time to talk and we urge everyone to use it and pray for success," they said.

Whether they are correct or not, this is a stupid message to send. Every time we rule out military action we take bargaining chips out of our governments hands and give them to the enemy. If we take military action off the table, what reason does Iran have to cooperate with us? Have you ever played poker? If the other players know what's in your hand what chance do you have?

Stupid, plain stupid.

I have to agree with your logic about poker but if you continue that logic that you seem to be playing against someone who has a past record of making some poor moves in the past and in some past scenerios been all bluff and no substance PlUS he seems to be borrowing money from dubious friends just to stay in the game.
Maybe just lean over the table and thump him but don't play poker.

You mean like we didn't play poker till Dec. 7, '41? Ya gotta play poker, roger.

The thing about playing poker is, you gotta have chips to throw in the kitty or you're forced to fold. If we publicly take the military option off the table, we're out of chips.

Yup. Last I checked, nukes are military. I guess there are those who propose that we send letters to Achmed the Unbathed when he sends nukes.

Gee. I wonder who'd win THAT discussion?

Ya this is a game of poker and attacking them are the only chips we have. Analogies and assumptions sound good sometimes but I think the Generals know a little more than you on the subject.

Oh I don't claim to be a military expert by any means, but I have sense enough to know you shouldn't tip your hand. Just for the record; I don't want another military conflict if there's any way around it.

Whether the generals are right or wrong, they need to keep their mouths shut when on the public stage, especially when on foreign soil. I would bet real money that there's politics behind this.

Generally seaking, service members usually lean right. At least they were until a certain incompetent chimp took over. So what politics are you talking?

Yeah I know they do, but not always. Wesley Clarke sure hasn't been any friend to the GOP.

I've figured all along that Israel might deal with Iran's nuke program, looks like they might have already started.

They should be the ones to deal with it though we are one and the same in the eyes of Iran. Its just a matter of time before this planet erupts and people think this country will be shielded from bloodshed but were in for a rude awakening.

Its just a matter of time before this planet erupts andLet's say for the sake of discussion that I agree with this. In your opinion, what should we do about it? Should we do nothing, or should we take a pro-active approach?

Iran is sitting on 500 years worth of oil and they need nuclear for electricity....riiight. Is there any further debate about the amount of resources and support Iran is providing to the insurgency in Iraq at this time? At some point, the hand we're playing is going to show, that we have been in the war on terror with Iran in view all the while. They are the head of the snake. Incompetent??? how do you deal with people who will send their young children with bombs strapped onto them? Send in the lawyers???
Quick, call John Edwards, I see an ambulance.....

yes I remembered the seventies version like it was made yesterday.something along the lines of kill the ayatola because we can etc.I sold a few bicycle banana seats with the ayatola's face on them.wow it was fun growing up in the seventies!haha!Hmmm I wonder if these guys are forgetting the not so distant past???????The fights at the gas pumps, the long lines........We should dump a bunch of cash into energy concepts instead of fighting wars for the big oil companies........just a thought.I wonder what ever happened to shale rock & getting oil from it?remember that? Our current technology could cut this nations oil use by 1/4 if we made it law.It just shows what happens when you have money IMO.

I read in Sundays paper that Iran opened up a nuke site to Diplomats to prove their not making a bomb. I dont know if this was on main stream news.
Lets hope Diplomacy works.
