I have a Honeywell Vision Pro (TH8321U) with an outdoor temperature sensor (C7089U) used for display only.
I am thinking about using a remote indoor sensor upstairs. (Zoning was my ideal solution during the system replacement, but adding zoning to my new dual-fuel installation pushed the price into 5 digits. Maybe another time.) The second floor is 4-6 degrees warmer than the first floor.

My thought is that changing the setting for 0340 to 1 or 3 will select which is the controlling sensor.

Must the single indoor sensor be the C7189U, or can the C7089U be used instead? I am not worried about appearance (at least not yet). If averaging multiple sensors is a better idea, then I would think the C7189U Remote Indoor would be required. How effective is sensor averaging?
Am I even close to a workable solution?

can use the sensor for indoor or outdoor, one at a time. If you are using it for dual fuel setup without a fossil fuel kit, you won't be able to do what you are trying.

If I understand correctly, your problem is the hot air rising, and with your lack of zoning equipmment, sensors in various locations are not going to help. Try dampering your upstairs registers to back off the airflow in the winter to balance out the temp difference. If you have an outdoor sensor in use, it is probably being used as part of your fossil fuel kit, which is not to be removed or changed for the sake of the equipment.
