(I couldn't find a forum for water heaters specifically, and I didn't know if this question should go under Hydronics/Boilers, so please excuse if I'm in the wrong place...)

...but what I'm still pondering a new high efficiency water heater and I'm wondering is if anyone can compare the noise level from a power vented gas water heater to the draft inducer in my 80% gas furnace (Luxaire 80K BTU, installed about mid-90s).

The reason I'm asking is that the noise from my present furnace is super annoying. If I go with a power vent WH am I going to hear that same "whoosh" every time I turn on a hot water faucet? If so, I think I'd give up some of the efficiency for a conventional model. Thanks, as always, in advance.

Don't buy a power vent WH for efficiency. They aren't. If in a conditioned space and you figure all the warm air that power venter is sucking out, they are very inefficient!

The furnace will sound quiet compared to most power vented water heaters.

Oh man!!!! Standard vent it is! I HATE the sound my furnace makes. To think that I'd have TWO of those things going at once some of the time!

If you were thinking about forking the $$$ for a power vent WH then you may want to look into an "on demand" tankless heater, with that you will actually have an efficiency increase. Check to make sure you have a large enough gas pipe to it though, they can draw more gas than a large furnace when they do run, but they only run when you are using hot water.
2 cents.
