I have a customer who acquired a couple D6F cases and wants to change them into a produce cooler. There is one D6F6 and one D6F8 that have 502 TXV's, I plan on bolting them together and installing a new (common) condensing unit to run them. I need to know what BTU capacity I need for 14 feet of multideck produce. Any help would be appreciated.

thanks

I do not want to marry the cooler

do your best to convince the customer this can not be done due to the sizing and mismatch. This has disaster written all over it.

I'd do a load calc. I'd tell the customer nothing would be warrantied and have him sign something to that effect.

The D6F is a low temperature case. While I'm sure one could guess at a compressor size, hook them up and get them to refrigerate the cases will never perform well for fresh produce....and especially unwrapped bulk produce. The airflow is way too high, the coil sizing is all wrong for MT and the resulting RH in the case will likely be much too low resulting in a pile of dried up greens and a PO'd customer.

Tell him to "un-aquire" these cases ASAP and buy proper produce merchandisers. It's your responsibility here as the refrigeration expert to tell him this simply won't work. If he insists, then tell him to find someone else and just walk away.

What separates a MT case from a LT case? Different size coil? Different fan speeds? Im an apprentice for a supermarket refrigeration company on an install crew and have never been explained what makes the MT and LT cases different from each other.

Coil and airflow. The LT case coils are disigned to hold more frost due to low temp. LT coils have wider fine spacing as MT and HT case coils have the fins spaced closer to each other. Air velocity in a LT case is usally alot faster then in a MT-HT case. Some LT cases my have up to 3 air curtains. Once again it all depends on the manuafacture of the case.

If you wish to accomodate your customer and do this job then please stop off at WalMart, they have a good sale on wedding rings
(cause you will be married to the job)
