This morning we had some snow here in SC and some icy conditions. I noticed my 1 yr old Infinity Puron system was iced over (completely over the coils) and the fan was making strange noises. I called the service company and their instruction was to shut the system off, switch to emergency heat and wait till it thaws before I turn the system back on. Is this the right response? My other older Carrier system has no such problems. They said the Infinity should never be run during icy conditions???

They gave you good advice to switch to emergency mode before damage is done to the cond. coil. However I would not just let it just thaw out and turn it on again.
If it's not going into defrost mode then they should determine the root cause of the problem.
No heat pump should operate in an iced up state. (not just Infinity)

Thanks Dave, I don't know why I was so stupid not to ask them why the unit was not defrosting. I guess I'm running pretty expensive heat right now.
Hey this site's been upgraded a lot since the last time I was here. Lots of nice new features to go with the great advice. My compliments to the managemet!

Sometimes the freezing rain and ice is just too much for defrost of the HP to overcome.
I wouldn't hang them or the unit just yet.

I agree with jrbenny and dash. If it is freezing rain when unit is running or in defrost the freezing rain will stick to coil and start building up with ice, which will make a typical defrost difficult to accomplish with mother nature's interference.
