Hi,
I bought I Rudd Heat Pump unit about a year ago....everything works fine, but I notice that the unit outside forms some snow/ice around the vents when I have the heat on, when it's cold.....it heats fine, but was wondering if this was normal...I do not get this problem in the summer time. I also noticed that my neighbors unit does the same thing, but his is older than mine. Anyone know if this is normal or not? If not what can it be?
Thank you all in advance!

The reason you get frost on the outdoor coil during heating mode is that the refrigerant in the coil needs to be 20-25 deg. cooler than the outdoor air temp in order for the system to absorb heat into the refrigerant. The refrigerant is then compressed (along with the BTUs in the refrigerant) thus heating up the refrigerant, and sent to the indoor coil and air handler unit to have the indoor air pass over the coil and remove the heat from the refrigerant.
If you get too much frost on the outdoor coil, the system will go into defrost till its gone then go back to working as normal.

Thank you both for your quick replies and explanation.....It makes sense to me now, I'm glad it wasn't a problem :)
Thanks again!
