Does anyone know the difference between the Goodman 10 SEER heat pumps and 13 SEER. 13 is the minimum being manufactured at this point I believe, but there are still some lower seer's in stock avail for purchase. Is the compressor in the two altogether different? I believe someGoodman's have the copeland scroll compressor and others do not. Perhaps the older 10's do not and the new 13's do? BTW I am having a very trustworthy contractor who I have used many times install this unit. I have had a Goodman AC/furnace installed in the past and never had a problem with it after 3 years. However, ive never had any experience with the heat pumps.

you would be lucky to find ANY 10 seer equipment around these days!
the difference between the 10 and 13 seer
is mainly coil size, the 13 has a bigger
condenser and evaporator coil than the 10
bigger coils = more efficiency = more cost to produce

i am not 100% sure on this but i think a few of the 10 seer heat pumps had the copeland scroll in them
do you have the model # of the unit would help out a bit in finding out for sure

Usually don't see scroll on a base Goodman til 3.5 ton. Probably gonna be a recip. Seems that way even on the 13s from what I've heard & seen. Robo will correct me if I'm wrong.

What is the "trustworthy" contractor recommending??? If I'm going new, I'm going at least 13 seer and was personally looking into 15 seer(I'm in a hot climate). Unless you're in a cold climate with a substancial cost difference between the two, I'd opt at least 13 seer. JMO.

Actually he says he would go with the 10 as it can get extremely humid in the summers and the lower SEER will do a better job of moisture removal.

That varies by brand and model. I know of 13 SEER systems with better latent (humidity) capacity than most 10 SEER systems.

Your trustworthy contractor sticks in my BS filter. SEER is an energy efficiency rating, not a moisture removal rating. Oversizing is what can reduce your moisture removal by resulting in short cycling your HVAC. A higher SEER simply means the watts / hour for x BTU's of cooling is less.
Going from 10 SEER to 13 SEER will save you about 30% in energy.

The difference between 10 SEER anything and 13 SEER anything is 23" difference in efficiency.
Scroll or recip compressor should not matter if the units can do the job they are intended to do, but as an FYI, no Goodman 10 SEER has a scroll and like baldy stated, most Goodman 13 SEER units don't use scrolls until you hit the 3.5 ton range when the scroll overtakes the recip in the efficiency curve.
While a standard install of a 10 SEER system will dehumidify better then a standard install of a 13 SEER system, there are ways to set up a 13 SEER system so that it will dehumidify as best as is needed anywhere on Earth.
For the record; I can still get 10 SEER equipment, so it is out there.

Thanks for the advice. I've read a lot of posts on this board. I'm not very knowledgable on a lot of HVAC issues so I try to read posts and pick up on a few things. I'm assuming my contractors statement about 10 seer doing a better job of moisture removal over a 13 seer was a general statement. He knew I was wanting to stick with a certain budget on equipment so I believe going with the 13 would require him to use a different refrigerant (?) to achieve the same results as the "standard" setup with the 10 seer.

nope; goodman 10 seers and 13 seers both use R22 there is a higher cost for equipment though
