Without seeing the job? I think that in the above case you might have just had your a$$ handed to you. Then again I may have read into your reply wrong.
To the OP.. There's no way of saying that what you recieved was a good price quote or not without knowing all of the specifications, duct routing, refrigerant line layout, roof placement, electrical, and a host of other things that can take a simple install and make it an impossible install.
That's why it is best to get multiple price quotes for any new install.

ya know...
looking at the scope of work ..
I freely admit i was wrong...
due to the complexity of the proposed work ...
it prolly cost the contractor MUCH more than $250.. to develop a comprehensive quotation

Read all you want into my post. Unless the OP trusts the contractor implicitly then he should get multiple price quotes. I don't know about you but if I'm about to spend $17k on a system to cool my computer server room, not only do I want to know that the system is right for the room but I want to know that I'm not getting taken.
I price shop on any major purchase that I make, anyone else do this, or should I just buy the first "widget" that looks good to me?
As for the trade going down hill... The way I see it is that a large majority of the craftsmen and craftswomen in this field don't do, are incapable of doing, or just plain don't care to do the job correctly. Don't believe me? Then why are there almost 3 times as many wall of shame threads than the wall of fame threads?

ok, ok ...
i give ... :D
my point is ...
this trade gives away WAAAAAAY too much
we are not talkin shoppin' for a car here
the Owner should hire an engineer for a project like this then, if he is uncomfortable w/ the price
not jerk around an endless string of contractors, till he hears a story he likes
do you get IT ...???

I can't disagree with that. The original post certainly sounded like he was having a new system installed.
Maybe not a new car, how about new windows on the house? Some may think that there is too much being given away but that is why they call it a business and not a free money enterprise. I'm not a business owner but I've been involved with enough of them to understand why I don't want to become one.
