I have to connect to a Johnson N-30 with an Ethernet crossover cable

I doubt I will acheive anything near 10 Mbs but it is still faster

The configuration software{site book} gives me the option to connect thru

the ethernet connection but before I can configure my TCP/IP

settings I need to knowthe N-30 Ip address

How can I perform a screen dump for the N-30, so that I may

find the IP of the N30

Thank You for any help

Use a null modem serial cable to connect from port 3 on the N-30, to serial port on laptop. Set up Hyper Terminal or VT100 emulator on your laptop with com1 and either 19200 or 57600 bit/sec (depends on how the N-30 was set up originally). After you've plugged into the N-30 and set up hyper terminal, cycle power on the N-30. When it starts up it will dump all of its important info to your screen, Computer name, IP address, subnet mask, gate, user name and password, bit rates for all ports, etc.

This is called a port 3 dump. This same procedure can be used on most, if not all of JCI's supervisory controllers NCU port 4, NAE port B, and N-30 port 3.

Hope this helps.

I have never done this before.
I created a site with the exact name of the N-30
I chose Ethernet connection

I configured my TCP/IP settings

In project builder I choose Upload Controller

However my Ethernet connection status icon never indicates that I am connected

It is working properly ,I tested it on another ethernet controller.
Where do I go from here

Thank you for your help

I've had better success once I can prove communications with the Sitebook. If you can browse the N30 with the Sitebook, Project Builder will always work.
Plus, once the N30 is setup in the Sitebook, within Project Builder you can "Edit Site", choose the right site/N30, and you should be good to go.

You need to go in first through hyper terminal with null modem cable and get exact name of n30, you need to look at the ip address and subnet and router address in the n30 as well. Now set your pc's ip configuration to very near the same as the n30. If the ip of the n30 is 10.10,10.120, set your pc ip up as 10.10.10.121. Subnet needs to match. Make sure you are using a crossover cable on the ethernet as a patch cable wont work or use a cheap router with two patch cables. Now once you have the right numbers you need to open system tools, project and name the n30 exactly as it is in the actual device and set the ip numbers in project builder. You should be able to do an upload. These will kick your butt until you do a couple. If you are still having trouble, post the n30 name and all ip's and we can step by step to get you connected.

Sir:

Yes I understand about the TCP/IP settings so that the two computers think they

are on the same network.
Am I correct in saying that I first must make the entry in Site book

If it is weel I can then Browse the N-30 database?

Thank You
I will get back to you

Yes, you should be able to browse in site book if you have the correct name and the cable is correct. It gets more complicated if you need to upload or download. As DaveM stated, this is the easiest way to see if the connections work, when you click on browse site, select the site and browse device, you will see a bunch of garbage (points) being flashed if it is working. Get this to work first and then I can help you with uploading.

I have an N30 that, when 24 VAC is powered, all LED lights come on and stay on. Is the unit dead or is there some way to reboot it? OK

Still not going through,sorry
The Eternet icon still indicates no connection ,can connect OK to an NAE

The mask addreess and router address hve been entered on the laptop TCP/IP

as they appear in the N-30 port 3 Screen Dump
The IP was entered correctly, with the last octet different

In the Project builder object window I have
OBJECT = N-30 oBJECT NAME= The exact N-30 name as in ProCom

Device Name= The exact N-30 name as in ProCom

In sitebook
SYSTEM= Bacnet Connection = Ethernet
protocol = IP bacnet IP port = 47808

Evidently I must be missing something

All it takes is one item

Thak You

Is it possible that I have to update the Firmware in the N-30?

There is a small reset button that is accessed by removing the center cover.
It will wipe your database.

Lets start at the beginning. Can you get a cheap router and two good patch cables? What version of Project Builder do you have? Get the router, plug in your pc and the n30. Set your pc IP close to the n30. Open dos and see if you can ping the n30. Type ping and the ip address of the n30, for example, ping 10.10.10.121. It should come back with replys. Sorry if this seems stupid and simple but you need to know that the two machines can talk to each other. If you can ping it, I can get you into it. Let me know. Might take a few days but we should be able to make this happen. If you want send me email at bdaniel at wyo2u dot com.

One other dumb and possible quick fix. In project builder under the object name of the n30 you stated that the name matches exactly, now with mview still open on the n30 object, did you scroll down to communication section and set the ip address and subnet the exact same as the actual n30? If not, do it, save it, make sure you have an ethernet assigned site in sitebook, resave it and you should be able to upload it.

we did this for a jace and it worked. google and download angry ip (its free). connect your latop and the n30 to a router. run angry ip scan. the ip addresses of all devices conected to the router should appear. we did this for a jace and it worked.

Ethernet tutorial for connecting a single device to a PC. Connecting a PC to a PC can be easier/similar or different because DHCP can be used.

Cables. Ports can be auto MDX. All you need is one and cross/straight doesn't matter. Get a link light. You don't need an IP address for that.

Some devices are finicky and won't work when connected directly. They need a hub or a switch. A hub or switch is another way to look for a link light. If your using a router with a switch, make sure your not plugged into the uplink port.

Usually there is a default configuration address for the device. Say it's 192.168.100.1

Set your computer for any fixed address between 192.168.100.2 and 192.168.100.254 inclusive. Set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. The gateway can be anything, but use 0.0.0.0.

Ping the device. Check your configuration setttings on the PC with "ipconfg /all" .If you can't ping the device, reboot the computer with the device powererd up first.

I appreciate all help
It is fustrating, I realize it is simple, but something is not going right

What is fustrating is that with all my ethernet connetions ,I
always get some type of connection as soon as I

connect my cable,in this instance I have nothing.

I am going to try a switch with two Cat 5 patch cables.

I will let you know, but thank you for everyones help.

In general:

Reminder, not all 8-8 RJ45 jacks are ethernet and not all jacks have something connected to it at the other end.

In general some ethernet protocols are required to be "enabled" at the device level.

A link light is independent on the addressing configuration. With it you have electrical ethernet connections in the right directions. You MUST have this first.
I think that if an interface is disabled, you generally don't get the link light.

I tried a Netgear Fs105 switch with crossover cables
and then with patch cables

The only device I can ping is the switch itself

No lights at all. No indication on the Connection icons

On every other device I connect to,I always get connection status immediately.
I even tried the two versions of the N-30

I am going to assume that the Ethernet port is defective.

If you cant ping it, you wont be able to do much on the ethernet port. This would be a new one for me, never have seen the port go bad. Have you tried a soft reset? Dropping power for a few seconds and repower, wait about five minutes before trying again.

Even the link light ,connecting the N-30 ,on the Switch does not light,

The link light connecting to the computer is lit.

I tried turning the power off for a minute,no results.

Does sound like a bad port. Now your stuck with the old, slow nine pin cable and that way blows, takes forever. All my n30's have ethernet ports after that first time with the slow mo method.

I have had to service and upgrade N30 controllers installed by other, We found that the N30 had a plug in and looked like it was ethernet ready, but, was missing the ethernet card on the module. You can get these for around $100, install it it and it should work...

Even the link light ,connecting the N-30 ,on the Switch does not light,

Must use a good cross and uncrossed cable or a switch that's auto mdx with good cables for the link test to be valid. You need a link light at both ends.

The link light connecting to the computer is lit.

So. That just means you have an ethernet connection to the switch and computer. Note typical stupid switches have no address.

I tried turning the power off for a minute,no results.

Can't hurt.

clmair2fly seems yo be on to something. I said earlier that there is nothing at the other end.

I will have to remove the cover and see if the
M-Net 1300 card was installed, even though there is a port.

Serial communications is out of the question
neither my laptop nor my partner's laptop

have any comm ports, only USB ports

I think project builder is looking for port #1

On the ethernet switch I am using to direct Patch cables

It works with NAE;s

If you know how NAEs work then N30 work similar.

connect to port 3 and reset the n30 with your pc in hyperterminal and it should do a port dump with IP address , Site name and N30 network name.

In sitebook create a site with the same site name. Then do a new project builder and create an N30-1 object and rename it to whatever the n30 name is. If you configured the sitename on project builder (edit....edit site). then select the n30 so that the whole line is highlited. then do a upload object and you should be able to upload everything. Should be pretty straight forward.
To use serial cable, just create on windows a dial up like connection but use com 1 and connect to port 1 of the n30, edit sitebook accordingly and it should be the same procedure.
