If some of us go thru the trouble of e-mailing mods to complain about another person on this site, I think the person being complained about should recieve that same e-mail.

Maybe it would reduce the number of complaints.

I would like to know if someone was complaining about me and what for. Not that I have ever had a complaint filed against me. But I would like to know.

The real problem is that some people in ARP cannot handle harsh criticism...

It's not a "e-mailing a mod" problem....

The people that are involved in this kind of BS a newer to the site, and get offended way too easliy.

ARP is a septic tank, and thats a fact! If you know this beforehand, then your ego should not be offended when people tell you that you are a moron for your beliefs. Regardless, people need to keep their minds open when they come here. It's not for the weak, or the pussies. We argue and discuss, and sometimes get personal, and yes, insults get thrown around.

Hey do you want to keep it in here, in it's own tank, or see it spread around in some of the other forums of HVAC talk? Thats how ARP developed, because peope where tired of seeing it in GD...

And thats what it amounts to. Some people here cannot handle the fact that there are some extreme ideas among the people that post here. Some come for the flame war, some want real discussion, and others are just spammers... Hey, it beats talking about contactors, electrodes and capacitors at times...

It's all in how you look at it. forget the taddle tales that cannot handle the forum, they should never even ventured in here in the first place. Perhaps thats why this forum has been Mod. free for so long, because we policed ourselves, and it was working, until recently.

I think I mentioned this several years ago when at one point the rhetoric was really flying, that the administrators or whoever should be aware of vicarious liability.
Let's say someone was murdered because of what had been said on this site (not an unheard of possibilty). Vicarious liabilty, in brief, might hold that because this site allowed the rehtoric to continue they in fact became part of the problem.
The usual vicarious liability is where I bartender is found liable for serving drinks to an obvious drunk who then gets into his car and kills someone.
This site administration is being responsible and will probably tighten up lots of rules to cover themselves.

Guys,

Do you think we (the Mods) are stupid? Well, don't answer that LOL....:D

Yes, we do get emails and abuse reports of someone complaining about some post or some other member. And, we try to answer every single site email, that at times is over 200 a day......Not just about abuses, but all kinds of tech problems with the site, email addresses, how to's and such, but, the Mods look at it from all angles, look at the post(s) in question, or the poster in general.
We do not make any rash decisions about anything.
If, there is any doubt, or for the most part, if there isn't any doubt, everything is discussed between the entire Moderating team.
This way, there is not just one personality running the site.

Oh, never mind, you said not to answer that. :)

A round of applause to the first God of HVAC-Talk, and a second round of applause to all those who are keeping this ship alive and well. And on course too, I might add. So what if someone has to walk the gang plank in order to do this. Others spend time in the brig and learn how to behave responsibly.

Interesting idea, but I think identifying the reporters will only add to the playground mentality and perpetuate the bickering.

The problem in ARP is that some dont seem to understand the meaning of respect. You can have a heated debate about any subject, but when one starts throwing personal insults at others, he/she not only disrespecting others, but disrespecting him/herself.

We also need to remember that this is a open part of the forum, and that the puplic at large can read this. Our behavior in here reflects who and what we are in our profession.

Its called The Golden Rule

I have tried to be quite on this subject, after all silence is a virtue, that we all lack. However, when something is typed for the whole world to see, its not a bad idea to practice a small amount of restraint. Its called decency.

The site Moderators relay information. An abuse report generated by a Member is rarely in time to influence a decision to determine site action but appreciated by all for further fact finding.

The email containing concern sent to the site are similar to the one below. I would post it here so that others may see. Identification of the author has been removed. I would like to thank Mr. Lusker for his answer to this member during my absence.

Regards,

Site Administrator

I don't know who will get or answer this. I've been on this site since the beginning. I forget when I first signed up under my old name but I know Don switched me over to XXXX some time in 2001. For the first few years on this site I used to talk to Don regularly. I know it has grown.(Exploded more like!) I also know the site has changed hands a few times. But I regret that I have not been able to catch up on who all is in charge of the boards. I have been out of touch from working and now due to lay-off I find time back home here alot more now. Now I scroll through posts and seam to see multiple moderators, bosses and administraters. I wonder who are we to direct any complaints too? Many of us old timers used to help Don keep rule by alerting him to rude and brash trouble starters. That way he could talk to them before things might get ugly. I am not refering to simple ego conflicts or differences in opinion. I mean the people who can not discuss without serious insult.(Not the ball-busting between old-timers who have known each other for years.) I see so many new guys now. Some of whom are just selling their products.... some are DYIers and alot of newbies and students. What is really getting to me is some of these new guys that in their first month on the board are running around slamming guys completely unchecked. I never used to tire of reading posts here. I have been guilty of spending entire days on this site in the past. But I felt I needed to write someone after realizing that after catching up on just a few threads I had to get off this site due to the distaste of some of the "disscussion" I have read. There is nothing professional about making comments in reference to small children, mentally challenged people and such ever. When a new member under 30 days and 100 posts is "talking" this way off the bat, I feel it should be addressed up front and in a swift manner. In order to set the tone for what we want this site to remain like. I do hope that you understand that I am not trying to tell you what to do. I am just thinking that as this sites population has exploded and the numbers have grown, that so has the numbers of "difficult members." My grandpa used to say "life is full of *******s.... every neighborhood has one and so does every school and market" "You need to learn to deal with them and the best way is to set them straight right away." "They need to feel like big men so they go where they are tolerated, take that away and they either have to change or leave." I know Don used to find that a warning or short suspension would set most straight right away. If not then you will know it in short time. I just hope that you guys get someone on this soon. I have not seen any sign of anyone getting warned months. Public warnings are good for all to remember sometimes.

Good morning XXX

Actually the way it works now is with Moderators and one Administrator.

The five Moderators scan the site looking for just what you described
and much more. The Mods email each other first as they are not allowed
to hand out sanctions to members without conversing. They do delete,
move and hide threads and posts until an action can be placed.

They answer to the Admin who makes all of the suspension and banning
decisions. He answers the site email (some 200 a day) like this one
and posts warnings among other things to keep the site running
smoothly.

The Admin asked for this day off and also wanted me to watch the site
as I have done in the past. I too have been here for some time acting
as a Moderator. It changes the way you look the site and at times is
just isn't fun anymore.

There have been many changes and yes, new owners. The faces have
changed but others have not. Running a site this size is a demanding
challenge one that takes 24/7 conscious wit and attendance. The Mods
are all volunteers and do have jobs which span from techs to parts and
tech support to business owners. They are a motley crew.

Don is still here, maybe not all the time, but I can see him lurking.
He also will delete a thread or two. He is brought into discussions
and his opinion respected. We still use the same rule dialog that he
scripted from the beginning.

For the most part we have banned approximately 250 people in the past
two years. Cleaned the site of Trolls and other unworthy beings and
have sanctioned hundreds more. The site is not a police state but a
site nonetheless open to the public and you can't get the public at
large to read the site rules much less obey them. It is an on going
battle.

I think you for your words of wisdom and we will continue to battle
and remain in harms way to keep this site as professional as
possible.

Emailing site problems or ideas is one thing. I doubt if their email has a whine filter. My feeling is that most problems between members are sorted out here. If a mod feels like closing a thread deemed inappropriate, so be it. I just don't like the idea of people who get offended by a post running to the mods attempting to get the poster in "trouble",no matter who the poster is. Let the mods police the forum, not "narc" members. JMO.

I thought the previous regime, I mean administration, had that market cornered. What with selling nuclear secrets to China from the labs in NM, Whitewater, stained dresses, renting out bedrooms in the Whitehouse at hourly rates, etc etc etc etc etc.........
