Hey Matt,
Why did you skip California again this year?

Comfortech has never been to California. We did do two Roadshows there two years ago and the contractor interest was so low that we decided to try other areas of the country instead.:(

I was there in San Diego which is in California. But some would argue that San Diego is basically in Mexican territory.
I think SD is not a hot bed for HVAC contractors. Looking towards the top of Southern California like LA or Orange County that has a high density population and a hotter climates would have been wiser. San Diego averages 70F all year long. That's like saying Long Beach is the same as Echo Park in terms of temperature.
Your two tries in California may not have been properly marketed. There are many diversions here so the market forces and subsequent efforts need to be stepped up than say Columbus.
I familiar with the market here so if I were given that chance in 60 days I can have 100 contractors signed up Los Angeles.

Got that big head from members of this forum calling me an HVAC god a few years back;)
In reality, my head size is 6-7/8", so I really have a little head. My boss likes to say it is only little on the very top making my head pear shaped. I think you guys are dwelling way too much on RoBo head.

Soleowner,
I agree with you. San Diego was not the best location. Most people from Orange County and LA will not travel down to San Diego for a conference. To the west is ocean. To the east is desert. To the south is Mexico. So, San Diego is limited to the local contractor population, which is less than the total population suggests.
A few years ago, when I was with Decision Analyst, one of my high tech San Diego clients recruited me hard. I met with the CEO at his house in some high end neighborhood that you could only afford if you took a tech company public before the bubble.
Anyway, we ate a catered breakfast and walked out back. He had one of those pools that poured over a wall, down the hill (no apparent wall). Across the valley, through the mist, you could see his neighbor.
The CEO was pitching hard, while I was thinking that I would be lucky to be able to afford a trailer (actually, I doubt I could). He reached into his pool and splashed the water. "C'mon, it's 72 degrees," he said, "It's paradise."
Proving that I have freon in my blood, my immediate thought was, "What crappy weather!"
The point is that San Diego is full of crappy 72 degree weather made by God, not contractors. Because the need is less, the contractors are less numerous. Thus, turnout in San Diego was less than optimum.
As someone who's lived in California on two different occasions and who's done a lot of business in the Golden State, I would like to see a Roadshow in Pasadena, Irvine, or Long Beach. I think the turnout could be pretty good.
However, site selection is a business decision. When the turnout is strong, about all the registration fees cover is the cost of staff and speaker travel. Penton needs sponsors to make money. Sponsors need to make money to sponsor. Penton needs butts in seats for the sponsors to make money.
If you want Comfortech to come to the left coast, get commitments. Get a local distributor or two to agree to promote it. Get the ACCA, IHACI, and PHCC chapters to rally around it. Suggest a venue with potential to draw walk-in registrations from across the region.
Local promotion and enthusiasm will get noticed. Start now, for next year. I would love to see a Roadshow in LA or Orange County and another in Walnut Creek or San Jose (though not as much as Maui, Key West, and St Thomas).
I don't carry a lot of influence (if I did, the first Roadshow would have been in Irvine instead of San Diego), but I will do what I can if a group of contractors from Southern California will make the case.
Remember, the Roadshows cater to plumbing contractors as well as HVAC.
