I was looking into getting verizon wireless internet for my internet, since I could take my laptop with me and have internet wherever I went.

It would be great for DJing - this way if I didn't have a song that someone askes for I could just download it right there.

Then I found out that if you watch streaming video, music, ETC, they will cancel your account!

Even youtube and stuff like that can't be viewed on their connection!

WTF? $70 and they tell you what not to do with it? I think I'll stick ith my cable.

That's a new one on me.
I like my cable and although Verizon sends me offers at least twice a week and calls me every other week, I ain't switching.

Let's start a boycott... Let's use wireless cards with high gain antennas attached to them...

What?

I have the Verizon EVDO card. I have had for a year and a Half. I do video streaming all the time.

The only thing Verizon will not allow is VoIP. And becuase the fact they are a cell phone company and don't want you to cancel your phone to use the laptp as phone.

Now on a side bar to that. Cingular I recently learned has the same thing as EVDO, called EDGE. They acronyms all are basically the same thing. Wireless WAN in speeds of 100 to 300 KBS. Now. They do allow VoIP. And I am looking to possibly change over to them deending on my new Ultra Mobile PC, The Sony UX280P Notebook.

Slim,

they somehow can block it. You know I follow all this stuff very closely. Verizon was first to market with high speed wan. But it wasn't super fast at firsts And quite honestly, by their own admission, they were very uncertain how the use of it would evolve or if they could even get it to be fast. I mean they knew it would be a huge thing and would take off like a rocket, but they just did not know which direction the use would be employed as it got better and better. The blocking was set up as they were employing the technology in the early stages of the development for this product, and when they realized it would soon become fast enough for the use of VOIP. They did not want a complete exodus of Verizon cellular users. The pace of development from a technical standpoint has gone so fast with this technology, the executives at all the companies have had to rethink on how they want to retain cellular users. And to a large extent this still has not been sorted out.

Well now. Free market takes over. The other companies now have their own products employed, as high speed wan, which in turn has made way for developing a faster transimision that VoIP needs to have. And so now the others are offering the use of voip. So. Verizon will quickly follow. It wasn't a real good strategy. It's kinda like. They had a policy. Then the world changed so fast, they never got around to changing the policy to fit the reality.

Honest to god. This technology is moving so fast, at lightneing speed. They are tweaking things and coming up with faster transmision rates almost every day. New ways to compress and push data wirelessly is like the Gold Rush of the 1800's.

In 5 years, You will not be tethered to anything, and your internet connection will be piped to you wirelessly, and you will be walking around with a Ultra Mobile PC. 5 years. Thats how fast things will go from this period of time.

OK, since this thread will attract the wi-fi WANabees and such, I got some questions;

Currently, I only use my home phone service for my fax machine and my DSL Internet service. I think it is too expensive at $129 a month, even with the unlimited long distance, which I only use for the fax machine.

I use only my cell phone for all calling purposes. I never answer my home phone.

If I cancel all wired phone service to my home, is there a way to have wireless Internet to my home computer as well as to my laptop?

I also have Direct TV service, if that makes a difference with what I would like to do.

Since I don't have a wireless plan on my laptop and must be near a wireless service to get Internet on my laptop, I would like to get into some sort of wireless program that will get me Internet service from anywhere.

If I get a wireless Internet card for my laptop, I can get an e-fax number and basically just get rid of my home phone service.

So; the cost of the wireless Internet card along with the cost of an e-fax number "AND" whatever I need to do to get Internet service on my home PC....needs to cost less then the $129 I am currently paying for the landlines that give me fax and DSL service.

Any suggestions from you communications geeks?

Man Robin you pay about the same as me, I pay 130.00 a month for Cable TV, AOL, and high speed cable service, but my phone bill is pretty cheap I only use it for fax and then my Mom can't seem to remember my cell number so I keep the home phone for about 27.50 per month and 7 cents a minute long distance.

I networked 4 computers in my home as as I work on and build computers as my hobby and with AOL up to seven people can sign on all at one time I like that, hey I don't smoke and if I did I would spend a lot more on cigs so I figure I'll just continue to pay for all of it, heck we all waste money on something so I choose to waste mine on all this. :D

My DirectTV is an additional $49 cost to that $129 for the phone setup. I just think I may be able to do better and get wireless for my laptop at the same time.

Robin. An air card and email to fax service is exactly going to work as you describe, as I use both together all the time. And the best part, your phone, and your internet are with you where ever you are. Which means fax capability too. Coverage is generally great in metropolitan areas and is sketchy in rural areas.

I use www.dataoncall.com

They have been great. 10 bucks a month for like 400 pages.

I suggest you start shopping for the best service. I will tell you that Verizon, Sprint Together with Nextel, and Cingular all have high speed WAN. But the speed varies depending on the area. One company is faster in certain areas over others. In Detroit Metro, which is a very large mass AREA, we consider all of Southeastern MI here basically Metro Detroit, any way, all three are awesome.

Start asking around. Another factor. If you currently have one of those three as a cell phone carrier, you will pay 60 bucks for unlimited data. If you go with one that you do not have cellular service with, you will pay $80.

You will sign a 2 year contract, but for $175 you can buy out of it. You won't though. It's a nice thing to have.

If your in the Market for a new Laptop, you may want to slow down and shop them too, as now you can have the laptop customized to have the radio built into it. So no need for a Pesky PMCIIA slot ready card.

Better yet go Ultra Mobile. As I will be.

Furthermore,

why do you even need a desktop anymore? I have been with out a desktop for 3 years now. There gone. You could do anything and everything via a Laptop.

Thanks for the info dow. I also have thought about why I need to keep my desktop. I guess the fullsized keyboard is still a factor and I haven't figured out how to get my laptop to work with my printer. I am just not as savy with computors as I am with HVAC equipment.

It really does sound like I can cut all of the wires keeping me in one place though.

if laptop equipped with wi fi and or bluetooth, and printer is not, you can for about 40 bucks make the printer wireless too. Meaning you could print to the printer from your laptop with out being tethered.

Robin, I too was an incompetent computer person. I learned very easily and very quickly by visiting the computer stores and talking with these 16 year old kids. I made a commitment a few years ago to stop in at Comp USA, Best Buy and Cicuit City every few weeks, just to keep up on whats is up. Amazing, truly amazing how fast the electronic product offerings change. I did it because for me it was my quest for my biz to do everything as efficinetly as possible for a one man show. What ended up happening was I learned a hell of a lot from these kids.

You learned the same way I did I almost consider myself a geek now, I am good to go on the hardware side but still learning some on the software stuff, I just built me another PC and I am using all SCSI stuff in this one it's very expensive but man it's fast and stable I love it.

I bought a laptop last month that has a built in full size keyboard. Numeric keypad, the whole deal. Not exactly laid out like a desktop keyboard, but very close. The full size keyboard was a requrement before I'd migrate to 100% laptop...when I saw the HP Pavillion with full size board for sale at a clearance price at Comp USA, I snapped it up. It's been a good machine so far. An extra bennie with full size keyboard is a widescreen monitor. Very sweet for watching movies and surfing the net.

I'm in the same boat re: a printer. My NEC laser jet is a dandy but it's serial port only. Is there a wireless device that can link to the wifi in my laptop and send data via its own serial output to the printer? If yes I'm there...I want that sucker. Seems stupid to buy a new printer when the one I have works fine...and it's easy to get the cartridge refilled at Cartridge World when the ink gives out.

It's not surprizing. Seriously. The policy was "against" the last I was informed. That was like 3 months or so ago. As I have stated. These phone companies and this WAN is really lightening fast for changes.

I have had my Verizon card for a year in Feb. and it has worked fine for me all over the country. The speeds do vary somewhat from one area to another, but I haven't had it be really slow anywhere I have carried it. Of course, that is coming from someone who lives in the sticks and has only had dial-up before.

I have a question about Verizon wireless internet cards. If I get rid of my current home line and DSL connection, can I still get on the internet or do I need to have an internet provider? I currently have AOL with my phone company and I want to get rid of both. Thanks...
