Hi,
I recently had a new fan installed for my hvac heat pump. It intermittently makes a buzzing sound when it's not working and I'm just wondering what this sound is because my old fan didn't make any sound when it was idle.
Thanks

as long as its operatng properly it sounds like your hearing the transformer, it is normal to buzz a little bit,but if the noise is loud enough to bother you
i would recommend having a tech look at it.

Did you start noticing this sound immediately after the new motor was installed or did it start later? Are you sure the motor is operating when it should be?
Sounds like the motor is attempting to start but can't and is cutting off on internal protection.
Call the service dealer and have them check it. Could be a problem with a starting component.

How consistent is the noise? Is there an electronic air cleaner? I have seen them buzz also even though they shouldn't be on. Get it checked out.

When you say fan, I'm wondering if you mean the blower motor (indoor air) or the condenser fan motor (on the outdoor unit). Either way, you are probably hearing a relay, not the fan itself. I'd get it checked out just to be safe.
Outdoor fan is typcially just above the reversing valve coil, which sometimes buzzes when energized. It stays energized all the time your system is set to either heat or cool, depending on the system type (most are in cool).
The transformer is in the airhandler (indoor unit) and can cause an obnoxious buzzing sound.
If it is indeed either fan motor buzzing, that would be an unusual problem and something would be wrong. Get the tech to check it out.

I guess it's just normal for this indoor fan to make this buzzing sound when it it's not blowing air. It's a pretty loud buzz and pretty annoying, especially since my old fan didn't make much sound when it was off.

Many labor warranties on repairs are 30 days. Have you called them back yet? The clock is ticking....

Do most new indoor fans make a loud buzzing sound when they are energizing?
