View Full Version : New Hvac
HI Everyone, I have a 2 year old house with vaulted ceiling about 20-25' high.(http://californiahomes2000.com/New_Homes/Seabreeze/the_cape.htm) My house caught on fire last Nov. I met up with the general contractor and I told him if its possible to put a dual HVAC since during summer time, my Master bedroom doesnt get cold and during winter it doesnt get warm, but the rest of the house is fine. They replace my 10 seer to I believe 13-14 seer due to the new codes. He told me that the HVAC person said that they dont have enough room in the attic to put a 2nd furnace, but they did put somehitng about dual thermostat. ONe from the family room and one on my master bedroom. They also replaced the air ducts and I notices a bigger return. The system is by goodman. Is there a site where I can do more research on hose this system works. I mean one HVAC with two thermostat. Is that like a light switch. You can turn it off/on from downstairs or upstairs?

We'd need considerably more info to try to help you, model #'s of equipment & T'stats for a start & photos would be great. The problem will be, there are many different field configurations possible depending on the preference of your contractor & the limitations of the application.
In general - if you have 1 system w/ 2 T'stats:
1) The 2nd stat is used for averaging the temp in the two ZONES
2) The 2nd stat is used to operate a motorized damper that may or may not be interfaced into the system to make a demand for cooling or heating. The use of a zoned (via dampers) systems normally necessitates the need for a dump zone to dispose of the unwanted air volume when only one zone is calling.
Why not call the installer back - let him explain the operation (pros / cons) of how he set it up?

Well it sounds like by the installer adding the second t-stat in the master he zoned the system and probably added a damper in the duct work for it. But I totally agree with coolguy and also say call the installer and ask him what he did only he will know what was done or not done.
