I thought my thread titled "Dude, where's my coil?" was funny. This is even better.
Saw these 2 big Allied (Lennox T-class) RTUs on the ground beside an office. Was down at the supply house and asked the owner about them. He delivered a month ago at the request of his dealer. Dealer wanted them on site so he could bill the general contractor. I made the comment that they were lucky to have coils left. 17 and 10 ton units.

The very freakin' next day, coil thieves hit. The supply house owner told me about it a couple days later. I just had to go get some pictures :p

Just hope the police investigation doesn't wind up on your doorstep if they find out you were asking about the units the day before. :p
I have a commercial customer that has 25 RTUs that had all the drains piped with copper. The building had more than 500' of 3/4 to 1 1/2" copper on the roof for the drains. Someone took it all in one night, had to have been a crew.
We went out and redid it all in UV protected PVC. The very next night someone cut the coils out of 7 of the units, all the 10 to 20 ton units, but left the smaller units alone.
The night after I finished replacing the last of the coils, all the same units were hit again!

I have not yet come across this in my area yet.Sounds like steady work...:p
And those are gonna be some expensive coils to replace. We just priced out York heat exchangers for RTU. Just a mere 100,000 btu Sunline unit........prices aren't to be posted so I can only say that they were TWICE the going rate for a comprable heat exchanger from a competitor's similar pelacement part. I think this customer may be getting a new RTU.
Coil thieves have been around Chicago area for a while now. I'm seeing roofs with cyclone barbed wire and steel cages around the RTU's.

I was told of the pecking order of subcontractors. Right or wrong, HVAC is below the tile lying person, plumbers, electricians, in new construction anyway...LOL Hey, just reposting what I'm told. HVAC supplier delivers a product to the work site. 2 day's later, the products's are gone.
The items were stolen from the site!
This tile type person said HVAV type people would not even question him, claiming they were so low on the food chain that he could get the Sub fired for even accusing him.
This cant be true, can it?
PS, My brother works in the trade and states that new parts just get delivered. No one say's anything.

Once I have equipment delivered onsite, I have the responsibility to install it or secure it UNLESS the GC or HO demanded that equipment be delivered before it was ready to be installed. Either way, if the equipment is installed or demanded to be delivered before it can be installed, it's NOT my problem if something is stolen. I would NEVER have equipment delivered and left without installing it according to code ( here that means we have to strap down the condenser to the slab, set RTU's on the roof curb, etc.). My responsibility ends after that.
Think about it, RNC...the GC orders appliances to be delivered, the next day they are gone....is that the plumbers fault for not hooking up the icemaker and plugging the fridge in? Is it the appliance delivery guys fault for not plugging it in?
HELL NO! This fight is between the GC and Property owner. Period!

This is funny , We are in before ANYONE in RNC and work side by side with the plumbers in CNC, Electricians have to work around both of us. Tile guys? LOL....we are DONE trim out before they even get there, Hell I don't remember EVER seeing a tile guy on a RNC job unless we had to go back to adjust grilles.

Wow, after re-reading the original post, I mistook dealer as supplier. You meant Dealer as in A/C sub.....OUCH, this one is on him!
Sad thing is, they could sell those copeland scrolls on ebay for 10x the amount they got for those coils.

Leaving uninstalled units around is asking for trouble,no matter who is responsible for it. Besides the ownership issue, now the entire job is on hold and it's popssible you might even lose it to someone else.
Get it installed ASAP.

why on earth would this have been sitting for so long? That is just nuts.
It was said, that this was delivered early so the GC could be progress billed. So. Who is gonna pay? Since the GC was billed and most likely contractor had been paid with in the previous month, now the general contractor basically took ownership of this equipment. Change of custody. The GC is an idiot. I am surprized any GC would let this take place. They are so cheap to begin with. They wouldn't want anything delivered and then paid on, until the last minute.
I use to sub for a national manufacturer doing refrigeration installs. It use to worry me they would have delivery of equipment prior to the actuall work needing done. I always would hear about jobsites getting ransacked at night. This is metro Detroit after all. I had brought this up to them, and they quickly started doing "just in time" delivery of equipment.

I dunno. But I can say this. The person who told me this offered me a brand new complete Trane 3ton AC. $100 bucks. He had it in the back of his truck, he just wanted to cover his gas for making a trip back to the jobsite to get it. He, and his parents, and their neighbors have the exact same setup. My up bringing would not allow me to accept this. Besides, I needed a HP, PROFESSIONALLY installed. :))
I saw the units, this was not BS.
He said that the person who delivered the units to the jobsite, (this is for a new resi area being built, lots of new construction) stated that he had to set the units down in the garage. After that, the delivery person stated "the unit's were delivered", and helped this dude load em on his truck. It aint right. But, as he told me, no questions are ever asked. I dont get it. By the way, I have a Goodman Installed in my home:)
The tile guy has his grr's as well. Steal that last box of matched tile that he is using, the HO then get's lot's of perks, just because that last batch doesnt "QUITE" match in color. (they come in color lots\batches I'm told) That or the sub has to rip it out and start all over. The supplier eats the price of the materials, the sub negotiates with the GC and supplier over the labor costs.
Again, no questions asked!! Just aint right.
