Guess Im venting tonight. Girlfriend told me tonight that her stepdad has a rental that the furnace fan is running all the time. Now I know it has a camstat in it and thats where the problem is.

She wants me to just go ahead and fix it for the parts cost but Im not budging ........ I told her no way. This clown worked for the gas company at one time and he is always fixing stuff for people for dirt cheap on the side. He was self employed for about 6 months and went broke years ago, and went right back working for who he left.

Now he is pretty old and knows just enough to get him in trouble but all the people he has known all these years call him up to do a lot of things. He has been doing it for years for bottles of booze. Ya ...... a $10-$15 bottle of whiskey or wine and he is bragging he is coming out like a bandit just because he is not paying taxes on it.

Now I use to get along with him ok in the begining until I figured out he was telling people he knew ......... oh dont call him, he is way too expensive. Now this jerk is always trying to get me to get him parts and I have pretty much told him that I dont have time running around for nothing.

The big problem is that the girlfriend and her mother are giving me flack about it. Funny part is the girlfriend is always getting taken advantage of by her mother and gets absolutly nothing in return. She does everything to get approvale by her mom and the more she does the more her mom takes advantage of her.

I have just taken the point of view that her mom is a selfish ***** and really dont want much to do with her. Only thing is the girlfriend is so busy trying to please her that she really doesnt care how it affects me, helping out a guy breeding low prices and bad mouthing my prices. Its crazy that I have to deal with it at all but then maybe it like they say like mother , like daughter as far as being selfish and only looking at whats best for them. It seems like it is always me that ends up having to do the favors, she always comits me.

Now over the years most girlfriends I have had understood what comes along with this trade as far as long hours and not doing things for nothing. This one totally doesnt get it. ME ME ME ME ME.

Its one of those cases she wasnt around when I first started out and has no clue what it was like in the beginning. If I had to deal with her when I was starting out ............ she would have been history or buryied where no one would find the body. lol

OK enough venting ....... might just sleep on the couch. lol

Not sure how long you and the little lady have been together but if she hasn't figured out the hvac life yet, she probably never will.

I read your OP several times and one thing keeps jumping out at me. Her stepdad has her ask you to do work for him. By allowing this to happen, you are putting her in the middle of a situation that she need not be involved in.

Sounds to me like the old guy is gonna slam you whether or not you do favors for him, so confront him and put an abrupt stop to it......at least you won't feel like you're being taken advantage of. Do this without involvement of your girlfriend and if she confronts you about it down the road, let her know that you refuse to be taken advantage of, end of story.

She will either accept it and life will go on or she won't and you move on.

As far as the girlfriend - its sounds like she's been in a pretty contolling relationship with mom. There is NOTHING you can do to change that. Unfortunately you will need to either accept it or move on.

My brother lives out in BC. knows alot of stuff. His wife used to volunteer him for everything because he's a pushover. One time her cousin bought a house that needed a panel upgrade. "No big deal", said my sister in law. Turns out the house was an hour away. One hour there and one hour back. Bro could only do it weekends so he makes the trip, figures out what he needs goes back the next weekend. Well, seems the cousin's old man is quite useless when it comes to doing anything. Inspector said wiring, too, recepts, everything...

36 trips later FOR NO PAYMENT AT ALL other than paying my brother's costs for parts only, my sister-in-law had finally learned her lesson.. She never volunteers him for anything anymore. They didn't even pay him for gas.

Stick to your guns. There are just as many people who are truly grateful you would do something for them as there are those who BELIEVE you should be grateful they asked you to do it!!

As they say, "There are those that can do things... and there are those who take the credit."

As I say, "I do this for a living, not to be close to you!"

What does your girlfriend think of you not helping her stepdad? I would help my wife's mother, and she hates me. But I get to sleep with her daughter. :o

You might also tell him that you could help him out in your spare time. Then never have any spare time. At least you didn't say no. Put the ball back in his court.

I agree with others. When someone asks me to do something for someone else, they foot the bill. I can feel the conversation comming on, ( I could get that part cheaper than that and put it on myself. I'm not paying that much to fix it. )

They will only take advantage of you as long as you let them.

I've always felt that someone who asks you to do something for nothing or for cheap feels that way about what you do. She seems to be minimizing your abilities and profession. I don't post here enough to really give my 2 cents and I don't know your situation with your girlfried. but what do you think your talents and skills worth? Or is this relationship really worth it? If I offend, I apologize.

Who owns the house or whose name is on the lease?

If it's hers, walk...check that...run out and get a place of your own, post haste.

If it's yours, SHE sleeps on the couch till she has a place of her own.

Either way, if you don't part company now, you'll find that is her lifestyle also.

And, either way, you gotta deal with it.
