We need to buy a new central air and furnace for our home which is about 2200sf. We live in San Diego, CA, so the systems are 80 efficient. The two system we are looking into is the Maytag M1010 80 single stage furnace and Maytag M1010 16 Seer conditioner (with a 10 year labor 10 year labor) verses a Armstrong Air Ultra v80 furnace 5 ton air handler w/ heat pump and a 5 ton 13 seer condessing unit 213LE (with a 5 year limited warranty on parts for furnace, and 10-year limited warranty on compressor and 5-year on parts).
The Armstrong is about #250 more. So what do you think? Some advice would be great to direct us on a good choice for our home.

Dosen't the Maytag come with a "Quality Pledge"? Saying they will replace the condenser if the compressor fails in the first 5 years or something?

Yes, it's a Nordyne product licensing the Maytag name. They use Copeland compressors.

It sounds like, the warranty should be the deciding factor, but is the armstrong product better than Maytag's product?

If you are getting a single stage Maytag and 2 stage 16 SEER outdoor unit, make sure they are including the variable speed blower kit. The 2 stage A/C won't work well nor get anywhere near 16 SEER with the standard blower.
The Armstrong 80V, make sure it is a "C" model which is 70% on low, not the "B" model which is 80% on low. I hate seeing people spend money on 2 stage and not tell much difference. The 13LE is OK but not up to the calibre of many new units.
You should compare like products though. Single stage 80 from 1 brand, 2 stage variable speed from another. 13 SEER base A/C from one and 2 stage high SEER from another.
