I work for a seven man shop, a mom and pop shop I call it. I just got a job offer from JCI/ York. The reason being I work on chillers Screw and centrifugal. I also do process combustion. I am needing some advice and wisdom.
Thanks in advance.

if you have had start-up experience with York techs on your equipment and that is that the source of the offer...consider it.if the shop your in is comfortable and you have no reason to leave stay put.you might get into a mass feeding frenzy...you need to feel out the York guys on the atmospere in the JCI run York office.

What do you mean by feeding frenzy? All due respect maxster you have helped many on this site . and I'm not biased either way with Jork .

I think its good experience to make the jump if your not happy where your at.
There are many avenues you can try with a larger company. If your happy where your at then hold off because that job offer will be there in the future.

One of the biggest complaints from the mechanics concerns the national accounts. You have to get to the site and dial a number from their phone. You have to give your account code, your number, job number, limited hours, paper work, etc... etc... etc...
Also according to some of the other posts, JCI has some sort of GPS leash (Indus) to track your movements.

if HVACR is a front line big tonnage tech the last thing the exsisting York guys want is a labeled "that JCI hired guy" come in with that type of experience to tweek them especially if he has had no contact with them before being hired on.JCI they might try to slide him into the National Accounts group(commercial) after he makes the move and regret it.i went into York back in the 90s with 10 years of Trane (total 20 years in the field)behind me they won't show me where the SH** house was.major experience scares the hell out of people who are in that "Knowing Mode" in this field....as in,this is what i know..... this is what i do or as is said "WAX on....WAX off"

Im with JCI. I dont see what the big deal is with arriving on site dialing and number and entering the access code. It takes 2 minutes. And the paperwork is easy, 1 invoice per job. Ive worked for some companies and theres like 5 forms to fill out for ONE job. And the benefits are pretty damn good!!!

Sounds like you work with some real jerks, I think I'd look else where.
It nothing like that at the branch where I work.
The mgmt seems to have some lingering issues, but us field techs just do our thing.

As far as Indus goes, we have been running it for quite a while now, and there is no GPS involved.
Nextel phones also have GPS capability, but that doesn't mean that every one who uses one has a transceiver up their a**.

Sure is a lot of anti-JCI B. S. around here.

I understand it's a really frustrating situation. The fact remains that JCI has lost some really talented people in the last few years. I was shocked when “Installation Techs” were given an ultimatum of less money, no overtime, and no company vehicle! Pretty much a take or leave it type scenario. I remember the disbelief on their faces and the go bleep your self responses. The other control companies were way too eager to hire them. I’m guessing they knew something JCI doesn’t. I watched people start the next day with their new companies. Then denial set in with the remaining people saying we didn’t need them anyways. I just wish someone would step to the plate and admit that JCI lost some very valuable people.

If you do go to work for the "Big Johnson", make sure to get your promise of schools in writing. We had a mechanic that waited for his chiller school until the day he went to Honeywell.

I used to work for a smaller shop - loved it. Just wanted to know if the grass was greener on the other side. Skipped town went to work for JCI - now I work for Trane. When it comes down to it the large coporations only care about the bottom line. Some guy hitting off the tee on the 8th hole decides if if you have a job or not - and your compensation is decided by a spreadsheet created by somene you don't even know. I wish I had my old job back at the smaller shop. My advise is if the people you work for treat you good - then stay where you are at.

I could not agree more! The corp. shops are a whole nother ball game, they are bottom line driven.....not customer service driven.

At least I don't see the guys who are benefitting from the bottom line when in little shop you might see them every day
